Wilma drops a lucky 13!

antelope Jun 11, 2008 01:35 AM

I came back from the HCU trip in west Texas to find Wilma settled in. She then came out of the nest box and was crawling around last night. I checked her last night and found her curled around a clutch of lucky 13, the baker's dozen, all looking good! Mildred's eggs are starting to drop into position, but she doesn't appear to be carrying as many, maybe 7 or 8. Wilma has been plump throughout, but Mildred has been a bit thin but I can feel the eggs in there. I am stoked! Here's Walt, the eggs, and Wilma.

Awesome......she is in her prime and should do even better in years to come.

Did I tell you that she is Emmas full sister? Emma has always out "performed" her until this year. I can't believe she put out 13 good eggs this year.

Todd, I'm really happy for you. Lets see how Mildred does now.

This was his 1st year breeding. I'm a little suprised he was so fertile.

I tried him last year but he was a bit small and didn't act like he knew what to do every time I put him in with the ladies. I guess he took a lesson from Lester, Vern and Sharktooth last year.

Are you going to double clutch Todd? I would........

I am prepping her now, she ate 3 small hoppers and a small adult, Walt ate one large adult, three more days and one more medium meal and it's go time!

Did Wilma spend any time with your other male? How about Mildred? I may have givin credit where it isn't due. You would know better than me Todd. Your older male probably has some pretty viable sperm too. I did for sure see a hookup with Wilma but not sure about Mildred before they left NM. If it is Walt though there will be no doubt. He came from Mike Bodner, and his orange and reduced black will show up in some of those wigglers.

I did put my msp in with Wilma, but these eggs were far along I think and probably already fertile by then, time will tell. Mildred only got a taste of Walt, as I really wanted to see animals from that pair.

Chris,

Once I saw the Wilma's photo that Todd posted, I was going to ask you that very question...Are Emma and Wilma related?

Thanks for the information bro.

Later,
Jim.

PS: Both of Emma's eggs are holding up to the test of time...So far, so good.

It's fun seeing you guys experience some success. Now to get them hatched out and...................... get them all feeding.

I hereby refer all those questions about getting hatchlings to feed to Russ Bates...........your welcome Russ.......LOL

I know it can be challenging getting alterna and mexicana to eat sometimes, but I have an abundant supply of lizards and wild mice for scenting ready from the get go. I believe I am up to the challenge, I know from John that they can at times be frustrating sometimes. Chris, just to let you know, the alterna are off pinkies and on large fuzzies. They really get me nervous in the beginning but seemed to have "kicked in to gear" at this time with a great little growth spurt. I will also get some '07 thayeri pics up, I am loving those girls growth rate!

Chris,

Yep, it's been a fun and interesting few months but, the "easy" part of the propagation in captivity equation is complete for this year (they did most of the work) for both Phase I (feeding to adulthood and brumination) and Phase II (egg fertilization & egg laying)...

With Phase III currently underway (incubation & hatch), I'm standing by for the potential hardest part of the equation...Phase IV (progeny feeding) in August and September...

I'm sure there will be moments of pure joy for the keeper as well as heartbreak in this phase and I'm looking forward to the challenge as it's been 3+ years in the making to reach this point...We'll see how things turn out...

Later bro,
Jim.

Jim, I have high hopes for your success as I know how long you have waited for yours to come into fruition. I think you may find that most of the little ones will get on track with a minimal amount of problems, here's hoping so! I have two of Chris''06 females that are coming along beautifully, just now starting a great growth spurt, I am shooting for '10 or '11 for them.

Todd,

Thanks man and success to you as well. Yep, going on four years now and 2010 and 2011 as well for my 2006'ers as well.

Those are some very nice thayeri that you have in the wings so to speak from vchris, whose "legend" lives on...Ha! Ha!

Many thanks Chris for the "tips" and 1.2 (Lester, Butterscotch & Emma)...

Later,
Jim.

Were cooking up about 10 Thayeri, two different cluches and about 20 pyros, should have about 15 Abino Cal King eggs To add to that in a few days to. And that would be it for this year.
Good luck on your eggs and hatchlings;
