diablo blanco eye color debate

bigdogreps Jun 11, 2008 11:22 AM

Hello,
Here is the situation...I bought a diablo blanco from a reputable breeder(we will call him breeder a) who states that he got the parents from another reputable breeder(breeder b). The parents were sopposed to be hets from breeder a and upon delivery breeder b noticed that they were pure dB's. breeder b produced offspring of which i bought a female red snake eyed. I saw pics of the breeders from breder b and they do indeed have pure red eyes and this is what enticed me to purchase the offspring(not to mention phenomanal whote coloring) However, breeder a says it is because the pics were taken in low light giving the illusion of red eyes and that he still stands by the fact that he sent hets. Breeder b says that is a bunch of crap and there is no way you can take a picture resulting in red eyes unless it is the real deal cause their pupils close up and only red is remaing(Im no photographer but you get the idea).Back to my baby...breeder a says she is not a true DB because even with her snake eyes closed I should STILL see red pigment of which I CANNOT. Her pupils are closed in the lite all the time due to extreme sensitivity. Breeder b says that you DO NOT have to see the red pigment if her pupils are closed for them to be red db snake eyes and that I will see the red pupils when they open. He suggested I hold her in the cup of my hand to attempt to get the pupils to open so I can view their reddness.I tried, shes not having it.So,which is it guys? Do you have to see SOME red color even when the pupils are closed or red snake eyes are still just that if their is no red when pupils are closed but red when open?
Thanks,hope I get some answers

This gene combo is actually a funny mess. The eclipse gene is variable and can range from solid black eyes(red on an albino eclipse) to just a smidge of black on the eye pigment, or probably even non expressed on homozygous animals. "Snake eyes" refers to an eclipse where half of the eye pigment is missing and in bright light you would only see half of the retina. It is a fairly easy mutation to identify on NON BLIZZARD animals. The problem with the gene combo is that the blizzard gene can randomly lack varying amounts of eye pigment making them indistinguishable from ones homozygous for the blizzard gene. Getting down to proof of genetics, this is a hard combo to guarantee - half explaining Rons high price. To make sure that a blizzard is also an eclipse both parents need to be an eclipse. So, to make diablo blancos you must breed eclipse het blazing blizzards or raptors het blizzard together. I would ask the breeders what the parents or grandparents were. if they say any of the lineage were homozygous blizzard and only het eclipse than maybe yours is only a blazing blizzard or at best one het eclipse. Pics wouldnt help much sadly. Breed it to a raptor or an eclipse and the result should be 100% eclipse or raptor respectively. If you look on Geckos Etc website and look at the blazing blizzards for sale you will understand what i mean. He also has a paragraph at the top explaining the difference. Let us know what happens
