Banana leaf geckos

paulstephen Sep 01, 2003 01:57 PM

I was in a pet store recently and they had banana leaf geckos. I have since looked for info on the internet, and come up empty handed. The person at the pet store (who did seem very knowledgable) said they were very similar to crested geckos in care. Does anyone have any onfo about these guys? Like how big they get, or longevitiy? Thank you

I think we need more info. Something more than a generic name would really help. Did the clerk give you any more to go on? What did the gecko look like?

Hmmmm I work at a shop and I can usually decypher our lingo but its not something I have heard of. Bananna often refers to a golden gecko but a bananna leaf can be anywhere from a flat tailed gold dust gecko (phelsuma iforgotus) to a lined leaftail (very likely, uroplatus idontknowus). Hope this partially helps. A picture would definetly help. A price would too because I can check our inventory and maybe match it. The uroplatus should be around 70-120 depending on the markup, the golden can be as low as 10.

Does it look like this? If so, it is a Golden Gecko scientific name Gekko ulikovskii.

No, I know for sure that it was not a leaf tailed gecko or golden gecko. I was doing some more research on the internet and tried searching just for banana geckos. I didn't find much but I am pretty sure that it was either Gehyra baliola or Gehyra Vorax. Gehyra baliola was called just a banana leaf geckos, and gehyra Vorax Was called quite a few things from Giant banana geckos to poor man leachies. It looked more like Gehyra vorax, but a lighter colour. I guess they can very, though. I would especially appreciate any info on longevity.

Thanks

yea, your right. Gehyre Vorax match the name, but they can get huge, and require alot of space. Feed them babyfood, (mostly banana flavoured), aswell as occasional crix.

If they are G. vorax, I've got tons of them. I've been breeding them for a couple of years. As for longevity, I've heard 15-20 years, but they haven't really been common in captivity long enough to determine the max.

The color and pattern varies throughout the day. They can be almost white one minute and turn to almost black with pink flanks the next. They do get huge! I have one male that's over 11 inches right now. His feet alone are over an inch in diameter.
