Grape Jun 11, 2008 03:27 PM

I have 5 sulcata's, I'm away at an internship and my mother just informed me via the phone that she fed them all mushrooms from the grocery. ARE THESE POSIONOUS? I've never heard of feeding them mushrooms and aparently they ate them all. Do I need to worry/have her take them to the vet? Please let me know asap, im really freaking out

Don't worry. The mushrooms sold in grocery stores are not poisonous. Additionally, turtles and tortoises can eat a lot of things which would be toxic to humans with no ill effects.

There are stories of humans who have died after eating wild caught turtles/tortoises that had eaten poisonous mushrooms and toadstools shortly before they were consumed by the humans.

ok, thank you for that response. I was worried that mushrooms would be problematic for sulcatas given that I've never heard of anyone feeding them. In the mean time they were given some chickory and aloe vera leaves to help clean them out.

Thanks AGAIN!
