She's LAYING her eggs! & special thanks

GarterGoddess Jun 12, 2008 12:49 AM

The bullsnake I posted about last week is laying her eggs! I don't know how many she's laid yet but I could see one through the sterilite container she's in (yes, it's one of the big sterilites that's larger than a 20 gallon aquarium).

Special thanks to zhaa, Tom & Jeremy for responding to my posts.

I have had quite a few snakes over the past 15 yrs. I'm fortunate to still have the majority of the ones I started with Some of the people above had noted the hesitance in answering my question was due to giving advice that might still lead to death.

Perhaps I should have originally posted that I'm not the type of person to ever play the blame game. I wanted the advice of people who have experience with breeding snakes. I know that when it comes to the health of my snakes, there really are no "rules"...there are always so many things that can go wrong.

I really do appreciate the advice that was given to me. It's having several opinions from experienced people that helped me make the decision to hold off on taking her to the vet for a little while. I live in an area where there aren't many GOOD herp vets. I pretty much knew that if I were to take her in, they'd automatically do something drastic. And I wanted to avoid that if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

Thanks again guys!

Oh & I forgot to mention, the egg she laid last week, I think, is going bad. Half of it is brown but the other half is still white. Weird.

This one is considerably larger than the first but it's beige, so I have a feeling it's a dud.

Hopefully she'll lay the rest without issue.

That is great news.
I had a feeling she would lay on her own.
I am happy for you. Just in time for you to go on your trip too huh? Perfect!

Thank you! She's not done yet, so I'm going to hold off celebrating until then.

I'm home for lunch right now. This morning when I woke up, she'd laid one more egg. This one looks pretty good. It's not deflated like the one she laid before I went to bed last night. I was HOPING she would have laid at least one more while I was at work this morning. No such luck.

If she doesn't lay them by the time I leave this evening, I'm wondering if I should cancel after all or if she and the eggs would be ok til Sunday. She has 3 more lumps to go. The next lump isn't too close to her vent yet.

Figures that I have a slow snake.

Oh, and I've been debating what method I want to use to incubate the one seemingly good egg so far. I have it in a container with damp (not wet) perlite in the bottom. There are air holes on the sides of the container (it's another sterilite one).

During the day, I keep my house at 80 for the snakes. When I come home, I usually turn on the AC to knock it down to 72 BUT, I can easily shut the door to one room & keep it in the high 70s during this time period.

So, I'm tempted not to provide any external heat. I've read a lot where people seem to just put the eggs on a shelf and let them do their thing naturally.

Would a daily temperature fluctuation of (maybe) 3-5 degrees be ok?

I think that you would probably be okay incubating them in the method that you stated. I incubate my eggs "on a shelf" at 77-80 and have never had a problem.

As far as your girl still having three eggs in her, she is probably pretty tired from all the work of passing the one tough egg and then the rest. I would just be patient and let her recover some energy and then the rest should come. Hopefully anyway! Take care
