Update on my BRB

PHLdyPayne Jun 12, 2008 04:37 PM

Yesterday my hopefully gravid BRB shed. Oddly she weights 100g's less than she did last month..though she did eat one small rat a couple weeks ago. Then again...I don't have the most accurate scale out there, just a dial type kitchen scale which measures in 20g increments. But she still looks big and thick as the pictures below shows. These I took Tuesday of this week, one day before she shed (she shed later that evening, as I found her done shedding Wednesday late morning)

Mine lose some weight in the last month before delivery. As this happens they also look very thin in the forward part of the body. Looking at yours I am pretty sure that is not what is going on because she looks so healthy and thick in the neck. Trying to decide whether they are gravid or not can be frustrating.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks.. well I have the baby rack nearly ready (just have to put it together) if she doesn't go, then phoo...but if she does, then I will have everything ready. In either case, it was and still is a fun experience. Though I am puzzled by her lack of appetite...normally she never refuses a meal and lately, she has been. So far she'll take food maybe once a month, for the last several months.

It is much easier to breed crested and gargoyle geckos... but if she does have babies, it will be so much more rewarding....only work involved with crested geckos was putting the male in with the female, putting a lay box in with the female, taking the eggs out and putting them into the container with incubation medium then sitting it on the top shelf...and check for hatchlings and dampness every week or so.

That pic is day BEFORE shed and looks that good!!!! Gotta love BRB's.

As to "is she gravid", welcome to the club!! Said it before and will say it again and again, some are obvious, some are probable and others are ?????

There is only ONE, 100% sign, of a female BRB being gravid - babies!!! All the other signs are indicators at best!!!!

Dave,
...I am hoping that we will both hear some fetal heart sounds in gravid BRBs using the Dopplers this year and that will be a better indicator.

i may have to invest in one of those Dobbler ultra sound things in the future, especially if I really have success breeding BRB's...I like the fact I don't have to worry about setting up the incubator for boas....just maintain the moms the same way I do always, when not cooling...one less thing to worry about

I am just about ready for babies, so if they come, they have someplace warm and humid to go into. I am not rushing to buy alot of rat pinks to feed them just yet. I don't really have anything else that can eat rat pinks except two young corn snakes...but I can mail order once birthing occurs. Unless there is a sudden provincial wide shortage on rat pinks or fuzzy mice...I should be able to get them in within a week. At worse I can just go to one of the numerous pet stores and buy what I need for a week.
