I'm so upset, I've let a terrible thing

lele Jun 12, 2008 07:18 PM

happen...

Ana (blotchie) is due to lay soon so I put her in a her laying tub today a s I often do and was gone for most of the day bringing stuff to my new place. One of my cats likes to watch them and "chase" them thru the glass. Because of this I put a t-shirt over the front and top to block her view but of course left plenty of screen open so her light could hit her rock and she had plenty of air.

I came home to the screen op off, the shirt on the ground and no Ana. They are in my office and I am in the middle of a move. This is by far the most crowded and messiest of the rooms right now. I have baseboard heat so if she got down into the piping/walls she'll never get back up. I looked under things and what I DID find was her tail - most of it. I would say it is probably 75-80% of it. The break looks fresh but I don't know if Lita got her, bit her and she is suffering somewhere, did she bring her downstairs, chase her into another room? I am so distraught. I am just sick.

I moved the litter box to another room and in case Ana is still in here and alive the cats are banished. I am hoping maybe I can coax her out to bask in the morning, I doubt I will see or here her tonight. She is not eating much these days so food or water won't be a big draw and there are SO many places for her to hide. I am more worried that she is hurt somewhere. She is gravid and not far from laying. I am so mad at myself for not keeping her in the big tank or securing the top with a rock or something. I was gone much longer than I thought, too and Lita probably got antsy and decided to see what Ana was up to. She has been in here before and this has never happened. I am so worried about her.....

Oh Hun, we all make mistakes. If you are in the middle of a move, I can see how you would overlook something like that, especially if the cat never showed interest. You know, the cat might have done it because she was feeling stress over the changes. I do hope you find her soon.

Thanks, Rosebuds. Actually, the cat has always watched them thru the glass and they are quite used to it. I had Ana in a separate laying tub and just thought all was OK. I think Lita (cat) got antsy because i was "late for dinner"

Anyway, as I was busy looking up here for Ana, they (both cats) had her downstairs in the kitchen. When I found her - all stumpy with no tail - she was in shock, bleeding with a cut above her tail and a puncture wound on her side. I treated her with the usual and since no vets were open here (I am in Northeast) I called a vet in CA to get some emergency advice for the puncture wound and anything else that I might miss in my frenzy. If she makes it thru the night I'll talk to my vet tomorrow about antibiotics just in case.

Gosh, I will cross my fingers for her, poor thing!

I think antibiotics are a must for a cat claw or bite. I'm not sure how resilient those particular lizards are, but as a rehabber, I have seen other lizard species overcome pretty bleak odds.

Please keep us posted!

She was so still and quiet when I first picked her up and I figured b/t being gravid and in shock (and bleeding) I'd lose her for sure, but she reacted quickly when I tried to wash her up with saline. Interestingly, she didn't budge when I used the peroxide which must have stung like crazy! She is a sassy little bit*h so I am hoping will be quite the fighter. Her mate, Stan, (their species is stansburiana, thus the names ) just lost about 1/3 of his beautiful blue tail a few weeks ago so at least they will match!

I post here b/c Eve knows me from other forums and this was the closest I could get to a side-blotched lizard forum. I'll keep you posted - thanks for caring!

Whewy, these little scaly kids sure make us a nervous wreck hunh. Stuff happens, to us all. I am so very glad ya found her though, wounds may heal quick if not too deep.

The saline and perioxide are good. The peroxide just FIZZles but does not burn. Cleans out any bacterial/germs, and cats have plenty in thier saliva.

Crazy how you were just talking about how bummed ya were about Stan losing some tail, they can console one another

Here's hoping she does well and lays those eggs and has many pretty kids with LONG TAILS. OH and tell that kitty to behave herself

Hi Eve! I was so sure she was stuck some where in the messy room and I would just never find her. When I saw her tail I did NOT think they had gotten her! Frankly, I am surprised she did not get away, but my little Russian Blue is a fast devil bit*h! I was so mad at her I didn't feed her until 10:00 last night - of course we were cuddling and purring soon after, she not really a bit*h but a very sweet kitty. She just reminded me that she is pure cat. She has wanted Ana as long as I've had her - well, she finally got her! I should be grateful that my kitties are the kind that "play" with their prey and don't just "catch and chew!"

I put some betadine on it and will put some silvadene ointment on it once I feel she is ready for some more handling. I know it stresses her so

I just had a thought though. Since she can't go into any sand right know and won't be able to for at least a few days as she heals up, what will she lay her eggs in if/when she is ready and will the pressure rupture the cut on her side? What can I offer her in her new "paper towel world" that will entice her to lay so she doesn't get eggbound????

I think if she is really that close to laying I would put a damp pile of sand on one end of the tank for her, so she does not get any more stressed.
You can always clean her wound each day, as far as her side, well she can't turn back now she has to lay so guess we have to hope her side will not open as she lays. Shame, what happened, but the little girl will have to deal with it for awhile, with your help,

They heal quick, hopefully all will be fine.
