What kind of snake?- NC, USA

What kind of snake is this please? Found 5PM in the grass in a yard, next to some woods, about 12 to 16 inches long, see pictures.

Looks like a harmless Checkered Gartersnake to me.

Although it looks very similar to the Checkered Garter Snake(marcianus), they are more of a western subspecies. In the Area of North Carolina, it would be an Eastern Garter Snake(Thamnophis s. sirtalis).

Yep, classic eastern gartersnake. Harmless, but often feisty if caught. They eat amphibians, small fish, earthworms, etc.
