Perfect constriction

FunkyRes Jun 13, 2008 01:29 AM

Sorry no pic - I'll try to get video the next time mom and dad visit with their camera.

The het PB Brooksi I got from Tom is the best constrictor I have ever seen. Every single time, he coils up the f/t prey absolutely beautifully. I've seen perfect coils from my other snakes on occasion - but this guy just takes the cake every feeding without exception.

I don't know if it is just this individual in particular or if it is brooksi in general, but it really is a beautiful sight.

I know what you mean, that's cool. My smaller king, the sulfur lav Dexter, does a nice coil around his f/t, but only if he's not interested initially and I have to hold the mouse and wiggle it in front of him and make a little Mr. Bill voice saying 'oh noooooo...big bad snake going to eeeeaatt meeeeee!' He apparently hates being mocked by a frozen mouse, and he hits it hard and coils up perfectly.

But if I just put him in with the mice and leave him alone, he doesn't coil around them.

I’ve seen a kingsnake coil a grip around a corn and then twist the corn by the head until it was a ball of kinked dead snake. Definitely a lot more work than killing a rodent. It may be that bullsnakes are conditioned to hold a prey item (or two) up against the side of a burrow, rat snakes just have to loop around a mouse, etc. Maybe kingsnakes develop that classic “hangman’s noose” type squeeze from coiling around other snakes and using their whole bodies to grip that type food item?

This pic is not meant to illustrate the point, but the little guy is getting down on two pinks right from the start!

This little zonata does it every time. Nice to see us appreciate our creatures in different ways. The beauty of evolution. Enjoy....

I have many FL kings that constrict and spin so fast they don't actually kill the mouse by suffocation, but rather by dizziness!
Heck, they even get the f/t dizzy!!!

LOL! True that Mark, that canefield girl is a maniac, throwing herself out of her cage and demolishing anything in her path! She is the terror of my snake room!

Those floridana "eating machines" come flying out as the lid is lifted to throw tight powerful coils on whatever moves,.....and sometimes whatever DOESN'T move for that matter!..

Glad I'm not the only one that has to move fast when I pull my Florida bins open!

....so it's not a King, but I saw this today and I took a pic just for this post.

I think these are the most powerful constrictors in the US, pound for pound, ounce for ounce.

My arteries, which I am quite sure would blow away all the pictures of "what perfect constriction is".I have a little trouble getting my camera through my chest wall, however, so the pics will simply have to wait for the autopsy.
What does this have to do with kingsnakes? As is quite often the case, I have no friggin idea.

DISCERN Jun 14, 2008 01:09 PM

HA HA HA HA!!

Speaking of clogging arteries, you ever get wings delivered to you at 1 am in Daytona from some of the local pizza places? Oh man, such a killer treat! Eating 20 BBQ or HOT wings, going to sleep afterward, waiting to get to the second day of the show on Sunday.

At times like that, life can't get much better.

I never did that, but a close friend of mine got an Italian sub and a strawberry shake at 2:30A.M. at the Richmond Va show and had kind of a tough morning the next day.

Thanks. It was a great time with a great friend.

I'm honored and anytime you want to get together and almost fall through the hotel window, and in the morning shout at your shoes from a delicious strawberry shake 3A.M. the night before, I'm your man.

viborero Jun 14, 2008 11:22 AM

Generic Mex. I was able to trace the lineage back to 3 previous breeders/owners. The last guy I found had no idea where the founding stock came from since she got them from a pet store.
