RioBravoReptiles Jun 13, 2008 08:55 AM

.. these are Chuckwallas from an island in the Sea of Cortez (Mexico).

.
They are a year old and about 6" (s-v) in these photos from today. As adults they will be one of the largest types of Chucks and be mostly black.
.
These guys are among the most interesting and sociable reptiles I have ever had the joy to keep.. just great animals.
.
Thanks for looking, have a great day!

The chucks look good. Hope all is well with you. Are you still breeding the Puerto Pinasco chucks? Still would like to pick up a couple if you get babies.

Hi Tom, the PTO Penasco chucks have done very well. Those are also extremely friendly chucks! They've been hatching late in September but this season (for whatever reason) they are laying now, about a month earlier than in previous years..
.
Just contact me about babies and I'll set you up. Chucks are easy to sell.. but finding really good homes for them (like with Tom Greb) is hard!
.
Here's some photos..

.
.. I enjoy this image of the babies first emerging..

Thanks!

Still jealous of you westerners. LOL. Wish I could do mine outdoors. The lizards and the enclosure look great.

Thanks! I'll share a secret on one thing I believe can really help raising big, beautiful and healthy Chuckwallas.... give them flowers!
.
I grow wildflowers for the chucks, especially Coreopsis tincta.. they love the flowers as well as the foliage and stems. Females especially eat them ravenously early in the season, they'll climb up my arms to get at them.. dozens of flowers and buds simply disappear!. Probably there is a lot of protein as well as other goodies in flowers. Whatever it is chucks thrive on them..
.
Here's a photo of the Coreopsis (foreground).. it's possible to grow a whole lot of these in a relatively small area.
.

.
Try it! .. annyway, the butterfly watching is worth the effort by itself!
.
Be safe.

The desert iggies are like that as well. The first thing I offered mine after they got here and calmed down was dandelion blooms. The male and one female completely forgot themselves and rushed over to snatch them out of my hand! Now they watch me bringing the bowl and I can barely set it down before they have their noses in it!

Gus, do they also like creosote flowers? I am planning to order some seeds and grow those for the DIs.

.
Creosote bush won't grow within about 400 miles of here! .. I have seen Chucks browsing on Creosote out west.. after every other thing that's any shade of green has been cropped away!
.
Sorry I can't be of more help on that.

Oh no! You just broke my heart! LOL! Well, fortunately they are adaptable. I'll work on getting some of the other flowers that you mention. I already have a lizard salad garden started, plus several hybiscus bushes, and of course the wildflowers in the field behind my house!

You know, its really cool how these guys connect you to the earth. Its the same with many of the wild animals that I have raised and treated over the years. Because of my herbivores and omnivorous critters, I take a walk out in the field to pick flowers and greens every day. My mali, Taz, WILL pout if I don't! I'm sure my desert iggies and bunnies would too. LOL!

That's a great observation.. and I agree.

Amazing photo! The quality is great and the baby chucks sitting on the adult is adorable. I think that's my new favorite chuck photo.
