Crotaphytus introduced to Louisiana

crotaphytidae Jun 13, 2008 03:38 PM

Hi everyone let me just say that I'm new to the forum and am a student at the University of Utah. I'm currently working on the systematics of all Crotaphytidae and hope to make sense of their somewhat confusing taxonomy. I have been reading on the internet that Crotaphytus collaris was introduced to Lousiana but have not been able to find out where. So I'm asking anyone in the forum to help me answer this question "When and where (i.e. what county/area) was Crotaphytus collaris released into the state of Lousiana?"

I know at one time they were released in Illinois and doing OK-ish. Last I heard the colony was no longer there, or no individuals have been seen in quite a while. I know exactly where, but have not bothered to look. I'm curious what you find out regarding Louisiana...that would be some strict. I guess they are in Arkansas so it isn't out of the question for survival...BUT if they're not in Florida already, they are probably not in LA either ;O)

Kind Regards,

John Eddington

Yeah but they're restricted to northwestern Arkansas. I've looked everywhere and can't find any information other than they are in Louisiana as an introduced species.

>>Yeah but they're restricted to northwestern Arkansas.

Are they RESTRICTED to NW AR, or just more reliably found there? In neighboring OK, I think they're found in all the eastern counties with the exception of the extreme southeastern corner of the state (coastal plain region), which would imply collaris isn't found (naturally occuring) in LA.

I've looked everywhere and can't find any information other than they are in Louisiana as an introduced species.

Have you tried their DNR?

I have contacted their DNR and still had no luck. They are in every county on Oklahoma this is very true and in Arkansas they are in the the contacting counties to Oklahoma but go in a north east curve from the southwestern portion of the state.

Hi, In Jimmy McGuire's book, I believe an exact locale is mentioned for an area in North Western Louisiana. I don't remember a lot of the details concerning the report. I am traveling at the moment, but when I am at home at the end of this month, I could look in the book and give you more specific info.
Take Care.

Yeah I know the book you are talking about "The Phylogenetic Systematics of Crotaphytid Lizards (Iguania:Crotaphytidae)" McGuire, 1996. I have two copies of it and I don't remember it mentioning anything about Louisiana, but I guess I could have just over looked it.
