What Kind?

My son bought this snake from a couple who rescued it from a a family that no longer wanted it. The original owners were calling in a corn (which I'm sure is wrong). The people my son got it from said it was a grey banded king, but I'm not sure. I thought it might be a milk snake, but I'm no expert and that's just a guess. The pictures are not very good, but I hope they help. And is there any way I can tell the difference?

Your son is close. It is in the mexicana group but the blurry pics make it tough to point out.

Charlie's right,...it's of the mexicana complex, and it's too bad the second pic is so blurry, but it actually looks to be a cross of either San Luis Potosi Kingsnake(L m. mexicana) x Gray Banded King(L. alterna), or Nuevo Leon Kingsnake(L. m. thayeri) x Gray-Banded King. It doesn't look to be a pure subspecies of either because of the band pattern, and the solid colored head with the very wide light neck band.

best regards, ~Doug
