South Mountains Locale Eastern Kings

westernNC Jun 14, 2008 12:48 PM

Found this pair together under the same piece of a/c in NW Cleveland County in May. Eastern Kings are not common in the foothills of NC, so this was a spectacular find. First photo is the female. Second and Third photo are of the male. The kings I find on the western part of the state seem to be more robust than the ones I find on the coast. I wonder if this is due to more of a rodent based diet in the western Piedmont/Foothills???

Thanks for looking,
Michael

I'm much more a snake guy than a camera guy. I'm usually so excited about getting from one site to the next when conditions are right that my photos end up looking like this...

Nice thunder snakes! I really want to spend some time in the sandhills and around the Fear river.

Here's one from New Hanover County, that I found in March of '07. I could have trown a rock in the Cape Fear from the spot where I found her. Notice the difference in this one from the coast and the ones from the foothills.

This was one was collected and eventually released where found.

Thanks,
Michael
