Hoke Co. NC Corn Snake

westernNC Jun 14, 2008 12:53 PM

Here's a male that I got from Peter Jolles last year to match up with a female I caught from the same locale in 2005. I got 8 eggs out of this pair last year and 9 this year. Here's the male...I wouldn't trade that natural look of a wild corn for any morph out there...truely beautiful snakes.

I added a photo of my son holding the snake for size reference. This snake is huge!

Thanks for looking,
Michael

Wow!,...that thing is THICK!,...almost looks like a huge gravid female!....., but I'm sure it's a big male too, heck, I can see the long fat tail from here!

Nice robust animal indeed!

It's probably time to cut him back a bit. He's a little overweight. He has been eating extra large mice or small rats once a week...along with whatever I thaw out that my other snakes don't eat. He's just a garbage disposal when it comes to eating.

I've bred him the past two years to a female that I caught less than 100 yards from where he was caught. The female I have from the same locale is smaller, but has more orange. I will try to post pics of her once she sheds (she's opaque now).

Thanks,
Michael

I've never attempted to measure him, but I'd say he's pushing five feet long. He was wild caught as a young adult. I think this has something to do with his size. So much line breeding of captive bred corns to bring out specific mutations may have led to a stunting of their growth. I would imagine that's why we read read that the max length of a corn snake is 72 inches but never see one in captivity that comes close to this.

Thanks,
Michael

Actually - I suspect the generally smaller size in captivity than some locales may be because a lot of morphs turned up in south florida, where corns are generally smaller.
