How do you cut up hay?

ytblazer Jun 14, 2008 02:33 PM

I keep trying to feed hay and the only success I have is mixing it in. I'm tired of scissors and blisters. I know you have a better way. Putting it in the food processor only succeeded in scratching up the food processor though it was kind of fun watching the hay go round and round real fast.

What's the secret?

I'm not trying to harvest it! lol. I want it into mini-bites for the resistors.

I use scissor like garden shears and do first cuts of the hay into pieces as I hold it above the bag. Then I just cut away at until it is the right size while in the paper grocery bag. It is the least messy way that I have found. Also, you can also occaisionally find a chopped hay with flowers mixed in at some major chain petstores (called 'sunaturals garden salad') is marketed to bunny owners. It isn't cheap, but it is good when you are running short on time and don't mind paying the premium to have the hay already cut up.
