A few questions.

Royreptile Jun 14, 2008 03:34 PM

I have not posted on this forum before, but I have been spending some time here as a spectator recently.
I have never kept Sauromalus before, but I have kept Dipsosaurus dorsalis dorsalis and found them to be rather enjoyable captives. I'm considering getting a pair or trio of Desert iguanas again, and I'd also like to locate a pair or trio of Redback Chuckwallas as well, if possible.
My questions are the following:
1.) Does anyone know of any reputable breeders of Desert iguanas and/or Redback Chuckwallas?
2.) I saw at the Sonora-Arizona Desert Museum that they had a large enclosure containing both a group of Desert Iguanas and a group of Chuckwallas. Would it be possible to safely and comfortably house both a pair of chuckwallas and a trio of Desert iguanas in the same enclosure? Of course, given the enclosure would be sizable and provide multiple basking areas. I know multiple species housing is generally frowned upon, but I was curious if such a setup could work as I think it would be an interesting venture.
Thanks for any help you guys may be willing to provide.

The DIs that I have are wc. I searched for cb, but couldn't find any. However, of my three, two are super sweet and will walk up my arm and eat flowers out of my hand. One is pretty spastic. If you can wait, I hope to have cbs next season. I have one female that MIGHT be gravid, but I'm still not completely sure.

I have also tried to get a cb redback chuck, but the breeders tell me they haven't had any luck this year. I want one, too!

Excellent! If you end up having any next season I would be more than willing to purchase a pair or even trio from you. If you're putting together a contact list for when you have eggs, my e-mail information is below - in my signature.
And I suppose we'll both have to wait and remain ready for the redback chucks. I'll keep my eyes peeled, though I doubt I will see them before you.

I response to your question about availability I don't know but putting them together would not be a problem. You seem to already know that the enclosure would have to be rather large and include multiple basking sites. Their food would be the same, but to help even further place a lot of rockscapes in the enclosure for the chucks but leaving plenty of open space for the desert iggys as well as making some man made burrow out of PVC pipe for them to retreat into. Good luck with your venture.

Thank you very much for clarifying my idea. I hope I'm able to locate some nice animals and make this happen. I think it would be a great project!
