Congrats on the good news, kids are a gas!
You're on track with washing your hands after handling the snakes and cleaning cages - everybody should wash after even casually handling a reptile - and I'd add that using the dishwasher for waterbowls or washing snake stuff in the kitchen is best avoided and if it can't be avoided, have a dilute bleach solution in a spray bottle handy for sanitizing the surfaces.
It's just common sense really.

I was showing some of my collection to some youngsters about a month or two ago, and a very interested mother asked me if I was worried about salmonella with my young children. I had never really thought about it, but told her that I have my children wash their hands every time after handling the snakes, closely supervised of course. I guess like Jeff and others have said in posts I have read about this subject "common sense" goes a long way.

Adam,....Doug Beard told me many years ago, that he got Salmonella poisoning. .....But I don't think the sandwich he was wolfing down while he was cleaning snake cages was too smart on his part.

Seems that "common" sense was severely lacking in his judgement on that particular day!..LOL!

This is an Excerpt from the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians Website:

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children less than five years of age avoid contact with reptiles and that households with children less than one year of age not own reptiles. The Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians encourages reptile owners with young children to discuss steps to minimize risks associated with owning reptiles with their reptiles' veterinarian and their physician. Children should be supervised when they are handling reptiles to ensure that they do not place their hands or objects that a reptile has contacted in their mouths. Reptiles should not be kept in child care centers."
