My first Texas ratsnake..

jhnscrg Jun 15, 2008 07:49 PM

Was encountered on Friday the 13th! LOL. Just happen to come across it on the local biking/jogging trail. This place is fast becoming my favorite route. In early april, also saw qa spectacular Broad-band copperhead.
Anyway, as regards the Linderheims, not very attractive & I didn't test their legendary bad temper. still, another Texas snake to cross off my Life list.

Sincerely,
Matthew
PS,
Not as attractive as your Leucistic Texas Frank!

Texas Rats aren't built for beauty. They're built to devour all the small, fluffy on earth and are eager to complete their mission.

Their famous temper actually makes them easy to catch. Rather than chasing them down, you only have to touch their tail as they try to escape and suddenly the snake is facing you and smiling like a shark. He won't try to get away after a single touch and all you have to then is update your will and grab on.

Well, I plan to buy stock in Bactine anyway.. LOL. I could only look, I was on a bike at the time. I stared at him, he stared at me. and went on his unhurried way.
Yep, not beauty contestant material. But a ratsnake is a cool snake ALWAYS..
That a wild caught monster you got there?

Sincerely,
Matthew

yeah, it's a WC.
some joker found it in his garage and dropped it off at the pets store in a pillow case, telling them it was a bull snake. When they opened it they saw that it was a texas rat. So they stuck it in a cage until they could figure out what to do with it. I came in 2 days later.

somehow, it was tame. The guy that caught it said that he just picked it up. I held it for about ten minutes in the pet store before bringing it home.

He's a great garbage disposal for dealing with rats that picky ball pythons refuse to eat.

You know you are hurting the Texas ratsnake's entire reputation, don't you? Everyone is gonna start thinking they are pussycats! LOL.

I think it's a genetic trait. He displays the "gentle" trait, which makes him the rarest snake out there. He's the only one in existence. I should breed him and sell the offspring.

4.5 CB Texas Ratsnakes, het for gentle. $50,000

Yep. Shame they don't have a bit more color, though I think they beat a Great Plains quite a bit in that regard. I'd buy one of your gentle strain!

Now that one has some color to him! Did you collect that one Todd? He has the appropriate Texas attitude.

Matthew

No, he was just crossing the road and therming, so he got his pic taken and sent on his way, lol! I like the attitude on these guys that I have experienced. A lot of them bluff but some mean business all the way!

Mine was just crossing the path (paved) but unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me. Plus he didn't have the looks. Looked like a very dark Gulf Hammock intergrade Rat, but with a trace of orange on the chin.

My two Lucy Texas rats do not bite and only one hatchling struck at me twice.

The male is a VERY mellow animal!

My lavender Texas rat don't like being bothered but is not overly defensive either.

Fortunately, those living gems of yours grew up with humans. I'd doubt a WC would refuse to chomp.

Matthew
You ever get babies from those?

FRoberts Jun 18, 2008 04:24 PM

She has laid three clutches so far. Two from those two posted and one from this snake which is incubating now :

Yep, my proudest field moment this year. It was quite mellow. I find it amusing the stories of aggressive, deadly copperheads where ever I go. In my experience, unless you pick it up or attack it somehow, these are calm animals without any malice. And beautiful snakes for sure.
I am not into morphs much, I think the BP & cornsnake forums have gone nuts over the next big fad, but your Leucistics show that some morphs are worth producing. As anyone ever seen a baby of these in the wild? I know it probably wouldn't last long but I'm curious as to where the first one came from..

Sincerely,
Matthew
