OK to house baby Leopard Tort outdoors?

DRep Jun 15, 2008 11:25 PM

Hello all. I have a CB baby leopard tortoise about 4 months old, and was wondering if I can keep him outdoors since weather is permitting. I have some old reptariums, so I was going to put it on its side and give him a few weeks outdoors if possible (with old hay as substrate). Just curious how much more susceptible young ones are if left outside, than adults.

Also, as far as supplementing, what brand do most of you use, and how often? I know it's not rigid and there are some variables, and know not to use D3 if housed outdoors, but if the diet is correct with 70 to 75% grasses, then about how often should I add calcium? I've read contrasting info and just curious for some input. Thanks and sorry for so many questions.

Forgot to mention that there may be some isolated storms over the next 10 days, which are my main concern. Thanks

Susceptable to what? If your keeping them in an escape proof enclosure what do yu have to worry about? The same principles apply whether adults or hatchlings. Sun/Shade/Deep substrate. The Tortoise knows what to do, as long as you don't make decisions for it. Personally, hay sucks as a substrate. Dirt is the best, as long as the animal recognizes it, and it's suitable for burrowing.
