jbagley Jun 16, 2008 11:56 AM

If I breed a regular male ball python(Which was bought from a pet store) With a Female Clown, I will get some regular, some clown, and some het clowns. Am I right or wrong? If Im wrong what would I get?....

Also say I bred a regular ball with a het albino... hwill I get some reg, some albino, and some het albino or what? Thanks

"If I breed a regular male ball python(Which was bought from a pet store) With a Female Clown, I will get some regular, some clown, and some het clowns. Am I right or wrong? If Im wrong what would I get?.... "

All would be normals het for Clown.

"Also say I bred a regular ball with a het albino... hwill I get some reg, some albino, and some het albino or what? Thanks"

All would be normals 50% possible het for albino.

Ok so then what would I have to breed to get clowns.... 2 Clowns or 2 het clowns? Or If I bred the normal with a clown and took a baby raised it then bred that with a normal I would get clowns since its het for clown right?

LadyOhh Jun 16, 2008 12:24 PM

"Ok so then what would I have to breed to get clowns.... 2 Clowns or 2 het clowns?"

2 Clowns together will make all Clowns.
2 Het Clowns together will get you 25% Clowns, 50% normal looking hets, and 25% Normals

"Or If I bred the normal with a clown and took a baby raised it then bred that with a normal I would get clowns since its het for clown right?"

Not quite..

If you bred a normal with a Clown, took the baby (100% het) and raised it up, you would want to breed it back to the Clown to make more Clowns.

Thanks so to get all clowns I have to either breed 2 clowns or a 100% het clown with a clown... And if I bred 2 het clowns and got 25%clowns 50% het clowns and 25& normals how would I tell which are normals and which are het clowns?

LadyOhh Jun 16, 2008 12:37 PM

"Thanks so to get all clowns I have to either breed 2 clowns or a 100% het clown with a clown... "

No. To get all Clowns for sure, you would need to breed Clown to Clown. You may get lucky with a 100% het clown to Clown, but you technically only get half visual Clowns and half hets.

"And if I bred 2 het clowns and got 25%clowns 50% het clowns and 25& normals how would I tell which are normals and which are het clowns?"

You can't. That is why there are 66% hets out there.

A clown bred to a het clown would give you 50% clowns and 50% het clowns.

When you breed 2 het clowns, you get 25% clowns, 50% het clown, and 25% normal. Unfortunetly, the hets and the normals all look the same and the only way to tell would be to breed them back to one of the het parents and more ideally, breed them to a clown and see what the offspring would be.

So What would I get if I bred an albino with say a super pastel jungle or a spider? Sorry for all the questions I just want to understand everything before I start breeding.

kthulhu Jun 16, 2008 01:27 PM

albino x super pastel would give you 100% pastel het albino

albino x spider would give you 50% spider het albino and 50% het albino

jbagley Jun 16, 2008 01:44 PM

So what would you have to breed together to get an albino spider?

robyn@ProExotics Jun 16, 2008 03:03 PM

i would suggest getting a copy of either the VPI Ball python book, or the big NERD book. or both. they are available here on the classifieds.

invest in the info that will set your course for breeding success.

your curiosity is fine, but you are apparently starting at square one. get the best start, invest in those books. read read read, and read again : )

You would have to breed a spider that is het albino to an albino, or a spider that is het albino to a het albino, or two spiders that are both het for albino. Then you hope you get lucky with the odds.

If your breeding a recessive morph (ex. albino or clown, or even a ghost, etc) both parents have to have the genes in order for their babies to be visuals of that morph. There has to be some sort of albino in mom and dad to make albinos, and some sort of clown in both mom and dad to make clowns (figuratively speaking).

So for example if you bred a spider to an albino, you would not get albino spiders (at least from the first generation) becaucse there are only albino genes in ONE of the parents.

If you had a spider het albino bred to an albino you could get albino spiders because BOTH parents have albino genes.

I hope that helps and doesn't confuse you even more.

I am all for people doing whatever the heck they please with their snakes, but I really have to say that a breedable female clown is a pretty valuable commodity, why would you want to breed her to a normal? Cross her with something else, get a male 100% het clown, or do a breeding loan with someone.. I am sure you could find someone, and since you have the female clown, you could probably set pretty good terms for yourself.

Think it over.

jbagley Jun 17, 2008 01:30 PM

No I don't have a clown and I was just using a clown to a regular hypothetically. I am trying to get into breeding but I want to understand everything and how to get different morphs before I start so I'm not confused lol.

I think I speak for most breeders when I say that nobody breeds normal males.. unless they think something is special, then they call it a dinker project
