Dwight, I used to catch these in that area. The younger ones aren't as speckled as the adults. Although I have a third one I didn't take pics of because it's in the blue right now...it is almost completely speckled.

And in one of my Kingsnake books, it shows nigra's range does not extend to north AL. Is that correct?

Sounds like that might be an error in the book? Maybe they mean holbrooki doesn't extend to north AL? Anyways, the pic below is an excerpt from Mount's 1975 book on Reptiles of Alabama.

Lauderdale County is the northwestern most county in the state, in the upper left corner of the map.

Looks to me like it could an intergrade, L. g. nigra x L. g. holbrooki.

The first snake shown sure does look like my nigra from northern Alabama...whatever the case, they are splendid snakes. Enjoy!

yes i also beleive those to be pure l.g.nigra,,that black and white specks is enough for me l.g.holbrooki IMHO tend to be more brown(chocolate)not black,w/yellow to cream specks,,nigra's range from n.ala through tennesee and ohio while holbrooki tend to be more southern ala. at anyrate great pics,,,thomas
