Hatchling eating after first shed...how long?

GeckoFire Sep 01, 2003 07:02 PM

Hey all.. I searched the forums, but didn't have too much luck with finding an answer. My question is, how long after it's first shed will a hatchling start eating? My hatchling shed last night(3 days old), I tried feeding him today, but no response to the mealworms yet... so for now I put a food bowl in for him, a shallow ceramic pot saucer, just tall enough for the mealies to get out.. but not too tall where the baby can't get over it. I have some one inch mealies in there with calcium.. I have seen suggestions for putting them in a plastic deli cup with some mealies and waiting until they eat them, and such... just wondering when I can/should expect him to start eating.. any and all help is appreciated..

when my babies shed i wait for their first poop usually it's pretty small once i see the poop i wait a day and them but some mealies in a bowl like you are doing i leave them in there a few days and then will take em out for cleaning you should soon after see more poop coming which means the fgecko is eating. i just continue to do this and they generally start fine on their own when are pooping and eating machines next thing you know. you are doing good just be patient

Baby geckos will start eating whenever they feel like it. I have had them eat the next day and I have had them wait 4-5 days. Each one is different but the average seems to be 3 days or so. They usually start a bit earlier with 2 week old crickets.
