So when color of eyes, length of tails, and concaved plastron or non-concaved plastron leaves you still fuzzy on the sex of your turtles...
A nice early morning romp by the hosta clears things up quite nicely.

HA! Consequently, the young lovers have spent the day following each other around the enclosure and searching and digging for worms and snails(it's been pouring ALL day) together.
I just hope this rain lets up soon so it will dry up. I have two EBTs coming at noon tomorrow and I need to get the big enclosure finished before then. I was able to concrete in about half of the posts yesterday, but really didn't get anything done today before the thunderstorms hit.
I hate to throw a wrench in this, but...the top turtle is most definitely a male. However, the bottom turtle may also be a male. Males will frequently mount other males and even attempt to drop back and mate with them. If the bottom turtle begins chasing and mounting the other...you probably have two males.
Three-toeds can be very tough to sex, obviously.
That is one big wrench... Obviously, they are. I searched three-toeds in the forum the other day, and nearly every other entry was a debate on the sex of one. Crazy. Well, I don't know what to think. I'll just keep an eye one it. I probably need to post a pic of them side by side showing their tails.
Well, its not surprising turtle #1 is male, he doesn't look very old or physically mature, I think it would be more surprising if #2 was male too, but I guess you won't be certain untill if/or when she or not she lays. I dont think that is so much a matter of three toes being hard to sex when they are mature, as it is that they are not at all obvious when not mature.

Here's a couple of pictures, as best and close as I could get, of my two three-toed's tails. Say that last part ten times fast.
The boxie on the left is male, we know, b/c he was the one doing the mounting. The one on the right and in the single pic is the one I and everyone are going back and forth on the sex of. It's tail is so short, I had to pry it out from it's shell with a stick and barely got the shot off before it retreated again. I hope these pics can help clear up its sex. Thanks all!
