rat snakes

stonzee Jun 17, 2008 05:38 PM

There are rat snakes that are in my out building. There are no rats or mice in there as it is a residence. I want to get rid of them. There are three that I know of. Any suggestions? All entries that they could have come in by have been sealed. I thought it was mice until I saw the snakes.

There are probably a number of things you could do.

1) Do you know anyone in your area that would come get them, and relocate them for you?,..or even take them to own them?....maybe someone from your workplace?

2) There are usually a fair number of "rescue" organizations that would help remove them for you. I think there's even a link somewhere on this KS forum that has to do with that.

3) Do a "Google" search with some relevant keywords, and locate someone in your area to remove them.

Please don't harm the little critters though,..I'm sure you'll be able to get someone to help out,.....there has to be SOMEONE in the immediate area that isn't afraid of snakes that can help you out. Were there's a will, there's a way.

Good luck!, ~Doug

As DMong said and also well that explains why there are no mice or rats, they have to be eating something or they wouldn't be attracted to the area.

There are no mice or rats in the building. As I said it's a residence. Also all ways they could have gotten in have been permanently sealed.
I have called dozens of rescue organizations. Not one of them will do it. I even called the county animal control. They wouldn't do it.
I don't have a lot of money to spend. Part of the area is used to store furniture and no one wants to search for the snakes.

DMong Jun 18, 2008 11:11 AM

Well,....the unfortunate part is that they are probably permanently "sealed in" as you said, and unless they are removed, they will likely die in there.

I would STRONGLY suggest that you put a couple water bowls down in a couple out of the way places in there, so they don't die from lack of water. Healthy snakes can go many months with no food,....but without water, they will die in fairly short order.

There HAS to be someone,(friends of other friends, etc..) teenage sons of your friends, etc..

In any case, please do the water bowl thing as I mentioned,...this will allow you a TON of extra time to deal with finding someone. The very LAST thing you want, is for them to die from lack of water inside the building, and then stink up the place because of their dead carcases,....not to mention having to rip the place apart to even find where the stink is coming from. Then of course, the smell will be "infused" into everything inside......yes, the waterbowl is the smartest thing you could possibly do in this situation. It will allow you PLENTY of extra time you otherwise wouldn't have.

best regards, ~Doug

There is water available as there are numerous plants in there which have been recently watered. Water isn't a problem.
And while others may want them to survive, I personally, don't care if they do. They invaded my house. I just want them gone for good.
And believe me, I have contacted everyone I know and no one is willing to deal with the situation.

Where are you located?

I'm in Arlington. If you're close, I'd be willing to do it fre of charge. I'll gladly relocate them well away from your home. But do you know exactly where they are hanging out, or will it be like looking for a needle in a hay stack?

stonzee Jun 18, 2008 05:41 PM

There are no mice in there because I keep poison out at all times.

Trolligans Jun 19, 2008 08:46 AM

just because you haven't seen any rats or mice doesn't mean they aren't there. ratsnakes don't just hang out in a place because they like the setting. they go there because there is food. Whether you see the rodents or not, you have a rodent problem and they are taking care of it. They can get inside the walls, up and behind things that you never could. they smell the mice and they're hunting them down.

EVERY residence in the country has rodents.

The snakes are not harmful to people, but if you want to get rid of them, you can always catch them and ask the local pet store if they can get them adopted into a good home or you can release them in a more rural setting.

But if you do that, you will start seeing rodent dropping in the near future because the predators are no longer eating the prey.

You don't know where I live. You haven't seen my residence. And to assume that every residence in the country has rodents is flawed. You don't know anything about where I live. I don't live on a farm. There are no farms near me.

Trolligans Jun 19, 2008 02:12 PM

I don't live on a farm. I live in the middle of town in a house that I keep very clean, but I occasionally find signs of rodents. Mice live everywhere and will get into homes to get to your food.

Ratsnakes avoid people if possible. they don't like being near anything large enough to step on them. But they also follow the food. If you have ratsnakes in your house, they got there because they followed the food.

Ratsnakes will not congregate in a house unless it has an abundant food source. And they certainly aren't there to eat cereal.

Set traps for the mice and the snakes will leave once their food supply runs out.

Or catch them and release them in a rural setting.

There is no kitchen and no food source in the area the snakes are in. There are, however, an abundance of house geckos outside. They have never been inside.
And the snakes can't get out as every entry has been permanently sealed.
When they are captured they will become chop suey.

Hey Stonzee, Whats up? it seems like your going to kill the snakes out of spite cuase you got your feelings hurt over someone saying you have mice? On your first post you wanted help and now you want too kill the snakes.

stonzee Jun 20, 2008 11:54 AM

Yes, I asked for help which I didn't get. No, I am not killing the snakes out of spite. I hate snakes. Period. This forum hasn't changed that. And no, I didn't get my feelings hurt.
In order to hurt my feelings you would have had to do something about which I cared. I don't care if you say I have mice. It just shows that you're making presumptions without having all of the facts.

Trolligans Jun 20, 2008 12:02 PM

maybe it's not mice that the snakes are eating. maybe you have a baby chicken infestation, or gerbils. but the snakes are eating something, otherwise they wouldn't be there.

there's already been one person on this thread offering to go to your residence and remove the snakes free of charge, you should take them up on the offer before you end up with dead snakes stinking up the place.

I had a feeling that this would eventually become a little "heated".

I basically have a Sure-fire way of getting them trapped ALIVE,.....but am somewhat hesitant to describe how, because of what might happen to them later on. My method for doing this requires someone that is NOT afraid of snakes, because they would need to have a short "hands-on" period with the snakes after being captured, of they will SURELY die if the method I propose isn't fully completed.

I would gladly share this if I knew they would be released alive,........but on the other hand, if they are not dealt with humanely soon, they will probably ALSO die. Sort of a "catch-22" here for the snakes.

Anyway, if you can get SOMEONE to deal with them after they are captured, I do know what to do in this situation.
