Lost Rainbow

brb_russ Jun 18, 2008 01:17 PM

Im so bummed . . last night Apollo, my first BRB, and by far favorate snake was found missing. . .

My girlfriend found out. I had him in with two females breeding in a plastic tub, i put them in there because it was more opaque and a little more room, thus i am not able to see in there very easily. Well last night my GF checked on them and he was missing, im not really sure for how long, could be days (I've been trying to leave them alone)

Well i tore apart the man room, and the living room, and closets etc and i cant fine him . . Im really bummed. Im starting to get the feeling he got outside.

Im leaving a heat pad out at night now with a box on top of it hoping to find him in there in the morning etc.

Russ,
...They can find holes to get through things and inside things in places where you would not expect. Many bothroom and kitchen cabinets have a gap at the top of the kickboard that is large enough for snakes to crawl thrrough so that they can hide under the cabinets. In closets they will get inside shoes and boxes that seem way too small for them to hide in. Many sofas and upholstered chairs have openings large enough for them to get inside. In some laundry rooms there are openings around pipes large enough for them to get inside the wall. Most escaped BRBs turn up closer to their point of escape than you would think they could be.

Also if you have other animals roaming in the house, like cats or dogs, watch how they behave. My mom found her escaped cornsnake when she saw her cat hissing at her closet
The corn was curled up in the corner of the closet.

Good luck,

Sean.

Yah, i know i have a tendency to scour the house when it is most likely inside the man room somewhere i overlooked . . . I keep checking the incubators to see if he got in with the bearded dragon/leopard gecko eggs. . .

Do you find adult brb to be more terrestrial then arboreal ?

Reason being I had a Albino Retic escape and looked high not low, found him two different times 3 feet off the ground coiled up in a dark area behind some Visions. (arboreal)

An adult Black Pine behind the toilet by the heat vent in the day time. (terrestrial)

Both escaped this past winter and I was fortunate enough to find them but I did gear my search based on the snakes habits and found them much quicker.

Taking that into consideration along with their preference for diurnal and nocturnal behaviors can quicken the find.

I would think brb's are nocturnal and terrestrial by nature but am not really quite sure to be honest.

Frank,
...With stacks of Vison cages in my snake room the escapees have the perfect hiding places. The cages have an irregular shape to the top and this makes a big spece on top of each cage covered by the bottom of the cage on top. They almost always are in that space between the cages. They often do go over the tops of the cages on their way so I would say that they are somewhat arboreal in their thinking.

What a bummer! I hope you find him soon. If he was big enough to breed, then he should be a tiny bit easier to find that if her were a baby. Good luck... and please let us know if he turns up!

That's sad. Have you tried putting food out for him? (The scent of mouse or rat might draw him out; leave a nice hide box right next to it for him to coil up in after eating.) Best of luck in finding Apollo!

My one major adult escape several years ao was an entire trio. Forgot to lock the cage while cleaning. ALL three were found together under the bathroom sink. There was a gap between the kickboard and the cabinet. That bathroom is right next door to the snake room.

My big girl got out and was cruising around behind the kitchen cabinets for awhile. Also try up in the fridge... it's warm there. Also try setting your alarm for the middle of the night and just walking around. I always find my escapees cruising at night. Just keep looking! Best of Luck!
