Something Ive noticed....

cinderellawkids Jun 18, 2008 03:04 PM

My Savannah's cage is in my office/study. Also in that room are my mice (which Ive had to put up a curtin or she'll watch them constantly) and my cat spends alot of time in there as well.

Friday, when I brought home my young blackthroat, we set his enclosure up in the diningroom on the bar counter. He seems to not be having alot of stress, and only buries himself at night.

Since we brought blackthroat home, it seemed coincidentally, the Savannah's behavior changed slightly, she resumed hissing when we walked near her cage, which she had stopped doing and the first couple of days she spent much time under her hide, which she rarely does as well.

Last night, I was walking around the house with the blackthroat on my shoulder climbing up and down my back-he thinks Im a warm tree, jumps on my wrist if I put my arm in his cage. Because my kids were running in and out of the main room I walked with him into the office, not really thinking anything of it. My blackthroats behavior instantly changed to climbing down, whipping, huffing, and defecating.

I can only assume he smelled the Savannah who was in her enclosure across the room and was frightened. He calmed down when I lifted him and went back into the other room.

Does this mean that it would not be agood idea to ever put their enclosures in the same room, or is it likely just because the scent is new?

Since nobody's replied yet I will.

Let me start out by saying that this is only my personal opinion based on my understanding of animal behavior and not based on actual experience.

I believe it's the new scent of another monitor being interpreted by the monitors as a threat and they can adjust to it once they realize that the scent, alone, is not a threat. You will most likely always get that kind of behavior when they see each other as long as they're housed separately, out of sight of each other.

I also think they can get used to seeing each other if they're kept within sight of each other.

I could be wrong. I was wrong once before but I don't remember when. And no, you can't ask my wife. She doesn't remember when I was ever right. Hahaha!!!

Hopefully someone with actual experience with this will either confirm or deny this.

Take care!
Mike

Great question, cinderella!

Now that FEMA has cleaned up the storm debris (threads/posts above this one) maybe someone will see your thread and share some valuable info.

Your patience and resolve will serve you well, here & with keeping monitors.

Hang in there!
