Cal king surprise......!?

xblackheart Jun 18, 2008 05:16 PM

I bred my female banded albino cal king to a albino lavender banana cal king.
So far, I am getting all normal cal kings. I was expecting all albinos het lavender. i think a few of the normals are real light and look hypo-ish or lavender, but they are not out of the egg yet, so dont know for sure. One thing for certain is they are lighter than black.
Why did I not get all albinos?
Here are pics of the snakes that I bred together...

The albino lavender and albino are two different types of amelanism. The albino (RD EYE) is a true albino T negative. The lavender albino is a T positive. Both these traits are not allelic with each other but now your babies that are het carriers for both genes will throw albino T negatives and T positives.

Also of note .. Not all lavender albino Cal kings are allelic when bred together. There are different lines within the T positive traits in Cal kings. Early on we used to label these with the intials of the originator , like the JR strain or JD strain.

I wish I knew which strain of lavender my gene is from.
I'll have to at some point buy a known (or two) just to find out.

I have bred that combo a few years back and got double hets....and some did come out looking "hypoish".

I've since bred the double hets back and got Albinos and Lavenders in the same clutch.

the babies are all coming out the color of the dark part of the snake that you have pictured. Not the yellow/cream color, but the purplish black color of your snake. i will post pics soon and again when they shed. I am baffled on this one.
