Fire Skink Questions

meretseger Sep 01, 2003 08:48 PM

I was thinking about buying a skink. Fire skinks seem pretty cool, but none of the care sheets I found are agreeing. ie-

-they need a basking spot of 105 f
-they need a basking spot of 90 f

-they need UV light and will bask
- they do not need UV light and do not bask

-they are carnivores
-they are omnivores

-they are friendly and can be handled
-they are not friendly and cannot be handled

-they need a minimum 20 long aquarium
- they need a minimum 3 foot long enclosure

So um... help? This won't be my first lizard but will be my first skink. I'd like at least a chance of taming it.

At this rate they're gonna sell it before I can get a cage set up. Of course, now I'm sort of torn between Riopa and Tribs..

I provided my fire skink with a basking light before and he just never used it, prefered staying in his little tunnels he made in the dirt. I suggest using a UTH attatched to a rheostat or thermostat of some sort for heat since they spend most of their time under the substrate.

Well as i said ^ they don't really bask much. But I use a UV in his tank.

-they are carnivores
-they are omnivores

They are carnivorous, I've tried feeding mine veggies once, didn't even pay attention to them at all and decided to go after crix, silkies etc.

-they are friendly and can be handled
-they are not friendly and cannot be handled

They are friendly and CAN be handled, but i hardly handle mine i just usually admire it for it's colors during those rare times that it's not burrowed under the substrate or while it's drinking.

You can fit one in a 20 gal long.

Hope this helps!
