Mutts and loss of habitat

Mjf Jun 19, 2008 01:00 AM

Hybridizing seems to be a controversial topic.....IMO, if it ever gets to the point that you cannot import a pure snake cos there are none left due to habitat loss, won`t the purity of captive stock be the least of anyones worries? If a mutt is gorgeous ie Roswell litter, it is more beautiful to me than any pure colombian, esp one that has had its colour bleached away from inbreeding. A mutt such as the Roswell probably is genetically superior to any inbred boa anyways. Lol.....it is irresponsible to cross a central american boa to any south american boa.........the babies are UGLY.

CA BCI are all FUGLY anyway IMHO, any kind of cross will only
make them look better.

I agree with your position. I'd never knowingly buy any BCI that
had come from a CA pairing but purely based on their aesthetic repugnance.

But, in the interest of fairness. We are mixing boas
specifically for color mutations aren't we?

Using destruction of their environment as a reason why not to
mix them isn't really a valid arguement. They aren't endangered
or even threatened in the wild, besides hypos are all based on
mixing boas from different locales anyways.

I'll leave you with this, when I look at a greyhound or a nice
bulldog and see how distinctive they look, I don't think to
myself, oh those poor wolves.

........Agreed, lack of habitat loss isn`t a valid reason to cross boas, producing a Rosewell is lol, better outbred than inbred if it comes down to it. Many peoople who are upset about crosses own boas full of recessive traits that are genetically weaker than any `mutt`. When it comes to higher life forms ie dogs, most people realize a mutt is far superior genetically to any purebred with hip dysplasia, gum problems cos of saggy lips etc. Reptiles are more resistant to inbreding and many breeders milk this to the max. to be the first to produce the first albino this, and hypo that, when it comes to boas no one can show a recessive trait boa that looks more beautiful than the mutt Roswell, can they?......Sorry, but adult albino sunglows are ugly, all that work for nothing lol

Looks are simply opinions, so anyone could show an adult sunglow and say it looks better than a Roswell. It's opinion based. Outside of that, I don't think Roswells are genetically superior, I actually think they look like something is wrong with them, same as super motleys. Also, although they are "outcrossed" in one sense, they are inbred in the next. Didn't Heather breed siblings to produce the Roswells? I think they look cool, but I still think they don't look "right".

We would all agree that a pure peruvian, suriname, argentine, sabogae, hog, etc. would be worth more than a cross between any of these right? The market for pure locality stuff has always been a far more stable one that that of the mutation world right? There are large scale breeders that command a high price for their good name and legitimacy for pure genetics right? If any of these localities become scarce for any reason it will increase their value, focus productivity and the people worried about extinction will be flipping the cash for what its worth to them right? I love both pure and designer stuff but all this worry seems pointless. There will always be a suriname just like there will always be a hypo because they cost the same. I just dont think the world of boas is going down the toilet, I think it is becoming what it should be and exceeding our expectations. Just my perspective though, and i understand disagreeing.

UGLY is realy a strange and hard word to use here(IMO). It is hard to look at a pitt or other breed dog and see how it may have come from a wolf. Yet no matter what animal we are talking about, with out the original stock the after result wouldn't be possible. Therefore , arnt they all nice for what they are. I also belive that differant people have differant taste. So since one may not be what I want to buy, I have a hard time calling it UGLY, if nothing mor than a respect issue

mjf Jun 20, 2008 12:44 AM

Of course, UGLY is a subjective word I fully realize that people may not agree with me....to me the Roswell siblings are among the nicest boas I have ever seen, as I said, more attractive looking than any pure Colombian IMO........lol and I never said normal natural Colombians are ugly for the record.....aren`t jungle boas mixed with BCC?(they are gorgeousIMO)

Jungle Boas(Brandle) are Colombian type Boas. Only if somebody breeds a Jungle Boa to a Peruvian (which has been done) or some other BCC is there BCC blood in Jungle Boas.
