Newborns this moring!

Miloradovich Jun 19, 2008 09:58 AM

My last expectant female was laying this moring as I checked on her before work. I haven't got a final count yet as she appeared not be done and had some visible masses still down toward her vent so I left her alone (after a few quick pics) and haven't removed any of the babies. I guessing 12-15 from what I could see although some had already slithered off to the other side of the incloser so there might be a couple more under the paper. I thought it was interesting to see that she had already begun to eat the slugs even though she wasn't done laying. Besides the slugs there were at least 3 still borns. I am curious to see if she'll consume those as well.
This pairing is from a nice female that has had babies for me in the past and a bright orange male that bred for his first time this year. It looks like some good looking babies in there. I am excited to get back home and check them out a litte more thoroughly.
Anyway enough typing, here are some of the quick pics...

CONGRATS!!! I love babies! There is an interesting looking one in your last picture. Near the mom's neck all the way to the left. It looks really tiny and really light colored. I'd love to see a better picture of that one if you find the time.

Aubrey,
....It looks like it is premature. They get much of their color in the last week of gestation.

That light one unfornately is one of the still borns. Like Jeff said too, they say color is one of the last things to develop so it probably wouldn't have stayed that light had it survived. In fact I belive Jeff posted a pic of a premie still born last season that was so light it almost looked albino.
I have noticed extra light premie looking still borns in BCI and my rosy boas as well. They almost look like a pastel version of thier normal colors. The extra light ones almost always seem extra small too. It definately does get you excited when you first spot one a light one like that though.

Milo Congrats!!!!

The slug thing is interesting because if you had not seen that you would not even known how many slugs you got, so some litters may have slugs and the breeder would not even know it if they are consumed before he/she finds the litter.

Do ther boas like BCI do this?

I know for sure Green Anacondas eat their slugs as well.

By reading the Anaconda forum and seeing Kelly Haller's experiences with Jud.

I've never caught any of my BCI eating their slugs so I assume that they don't but maybe some do. I have found BRB litters with no slugs where she's probably eaten them but usually I will see and have to clean up a couple of slugs with my BCI litters.
I have seen some anaconda documentaries too with them eating the slugs as well as the stills, which is what makes me curious as to wether this female will eat her stillborns. I guess I 'll find out in a hour or two when I get home. On an iteresting note in one of the documentaries that I remember the anaconda that they were filming was very gentle with the still borns first and rolled them around in her mouth a litte to make sure that they were in fact dead and any that moved she very gently set back down. I understand that for a long time it was belived that anaconda mothers were canabalistic until this behavior was filmed.

By the way, how is your gravid Dumeril coming along? I am anxious to see how your breeding turns out. I bred some a few years back but didn't have much luck and eventually got rid of them.

I have a few recent posts about the dumeril's here.

Time will tell!!!

I have seen BRBs mouth and then release live babies and stillborns. I have seen them eat a bunch of slugs and have never seen one eat a stillborn. There was a really nice Nat. Geo. short video on MSN.com just the other day of an Anaconda devouring slugs and stillborns. I think I remember someone saying that their Bci had eaten slugs. Not many reports of it on the Boa Forum so I think it is not common.

I got to see this several years ago.The female nudged the two stillborns around before she decided they were in fact gone and then ate them.Terry

Jeff Clark Jun 23, 2008 10:35 PM

Terry,
...Nice to see you posting on the Rainbow Boa Forum. Those are certainly interesting PICs. I have never seen them do that. I have seen them mouth stillborns and even live babies but release them as soon as they have them in their mouths. How was the show saturday?

Great pics! Since I don't get to breed snakes, I really love to see everyon elses litters. Congrats on the new boas! They're beautiful (as you already know). Post more tonight.

Thanks! I'll try to get some more shots this weekend. I've been working alot of extra hours so I'm spread pretty thin for time right now.
Why don't you get to breed snakes?

ReneeValois Jun 21, 2008 11:36 AM

My husband is against it, although I might change his mind some day. He originally told me I could get only one snake and I'm up to 3---plus I got his reluctant approval to get a baby blood python for my birthday next Friday I'm keeping an eye on the babies hatching out on the Blood Python Forum; I particularly want a baby from a deep red clutch that should hatch out this week.

Congratulations on the nice litter. Great picture of mom
having a post-partum snack.

Thanks for the pics,

miloradovich Jun 20, 2008 09:11 AM

Thanks Ed! That appears to be the only slug that she ate yesterday, unless she passed more after I went to work. 15 live, big and healthy babies though so I'm pretty thrilled with the outcome of the litter. I'm excited to see how these guys turn out after they all shed too.

paulbuck Jun 20, 2008 09:45 AM

Milo,
Big congrats! Is this the litter you were expecting in late May/early June? She was holding on (I guessed June 4th on your short-fated contest). Nice looking litter. Have fun sorting them out.
Paul

miloradovich Jun 20, 2008 12:11 PM

Thanks, and yeah I was expecting this girl to drop her litter sooner. She did go almost 130 days but I also had her shed date wrong in my head when I originally posted that I thought she was at day 115. I think she was only at 105 or so at that point. I had the month right but the date I got mixed up with the shed date of a BCI due late next month.

rainbowsrus Jun 21, 2008 01:37 PM

Very glad to see she finally dropped a nice pile o slimey babies for you!!!!!!!!

Looking forward to those first shed pics!!!!

Thanks Dave, I still gotta get some updated pics of the other two litter and some of those are already on their second shed! I guess I'm a bit of a slacker lately when it comes to my picture taking. I'll try to actually get post shed pics of this litter to post.
