New here, New to Reptiles

TootsieandDigit Jun 19, 2008 10:32 AM

Hello,

I am new here and relatively new to reptiles. A good friend of mine from Michigan Reptile Rescue has assisted me in my Boxer Rescue for a few years now. When I first met her I could not imagine ever owning a reptile of any kind. Silly me!

I now have a Bearded Dragon named Matilda(from Rescue), a Mali Uromastyx, two crested geckos and now two Iguanas.

I love them all but have discovered that Iguanas are my true love. I just cannot resist them and have yet to meet one I dont fall for. My two are Tootsie and Digit. Tootsie came from rescue a year ago. One of my boxer fosters transported her to Jane and I met her at the same time. I fell in love and offered to foster her. It took me about two weeks to decide to just adopt her. I love Tootsie and I got very lucky with her. She is sweet, affectionate and very easy to care for.
We have another green Iguana, Digit, who is not actually here yet. He is a rescue who has had a good life and great care but sadly his owner was unable to keep him. He is staying with Jane until she feels he is ready for the transition. His name is Digit and he is very handsome!

I am looking for owners of Rhino Iguanas to talk to though. I seriously am considering adopting one and would like to know about them from other owners. I have read pretty much everything I can find and have talked to Jane for hours on the subject. I have met her Rhinos as well and really love them, especially Bubbles.

I am very excited to be helping with Reptile rescue. It is fascinating to learn more about these wonderful creatures and I know I have so much to learn.

Please excuse me if sometimes I ask questions that might seem silly or stupid. I am just trying to learn from those who know more than I do.

Thank you

Beth Moody

Welcome and good luck with the lizards. You may not find Rhino Iguanas to rescue as most folks that have them keep them....TC

hey Tom, glad to see you hanging around the Iguana forums. Just had to tell you that I've placed 4 Rhino iguanas in the last several years, all of them nice males. Three of them came to me as rescues of sorts, the 4th was one that I purchased as a yearling hoping it was female and it was a male. I ended up keeping another female that came in as a rescue with a large group of nice animals. We will eventually find Beth a Rhino if that is what she wants. Maybe, if I get fertile eggs this year, I'll incubate just one for her. I'm sure she'd love a Bubbles baby.

Actually I have had several Spiny Tailed iguanas in my rescue as well. I have adopted 2 cyclura as well as a lovely spiny tailed. Things are possible to those with patience. The pic is one of my adoptions.

Welcome Beth,

You will find that the previous owner of Digit will be VERY happy to learn you are coming to the forum. LindaG had a hard time coming to her decision to surrender Digit, but her health came first. I have never heard of or seen a reaction like Linda had, so she will be very happy to see updates here!

I will however not share my experiences with my rhinos as my Rhino is much like Jane's Azul and a little turd. With Jane at your side, you will be fine with the rhinos. Be prepared as they are a slightly different ball game than the greens. Far more intellegent, IMHO.

I heard a rumor that Shamrock got placed? She was beautiful!

Welcome, and to talk to more rhino people, check the cyclura forum!

Thanks Cindy,

I am very thrilled to be getting Digit. I love that I know he has been loved and cared for before I got it. My Tootsie came to Jane in Great condition and very sweet and I wanted a friend for her but I really wanted another nice Iguana like her.

I know that I will have to give Digit time to trust me and to adjust but I can be patient with him. Before long he and I will be close.

Tootsie, as sweet as she is, is totally my husbands pal. I can hold her and she seems to like the attention but as soon as Bill comes in the room she leaves me to go to him.

I will keep Linda and everyone updated on Digit, send pics and take very good care of him.

After I get Tootsie and Digit introduced I will get pics of them together.

I dont intend on introducing them for a while. My husband and I are building a very large indoor enclosure for them to be in together.

Thanks Cindy. Its great to be here

Digit got here today and in spite of all he has been through, he ate his dinner! I am very optomistic about his adjustment here. He is a very nice boy and very pretty too.
I will get pics in the next few days.
Beth
