Finally ate after 10 months!!!

kangaskritters Jun 19, 2008 05:07 PM

I have a male pied that last ate on October 2, 2007. He was around 830 grams at that time. I did put him with a female albino over the winter and he started losing weight while not eating. When he dropped about 200 grams I pulled him from breeding and started trying to feed him again. It's taken 10 months, but he finally ate a small rat today. I hope this story makes some people feel better as we've all heard that ball pythons do this. Here's to patience!

Sorry, I was so excited I forgot how to count. It was just over 8 months, not 10.

I am in the North East, and I had a couple girls that have always gone back on feed in previous years by like March - April, but this year it took till late May - June for everyone to start eating again. I believe it was maybe because we had a very, very mild spring and we just started getting 75-85 degree days about two weeks ago. My het Pied girl was a little over 1350 grams roughly last fall when she went off feed in November, I was gonne breed her anyway because it was her third winter as she was a very late 05 baby, but she never went. There bodies know when they are ready i guess? Anyway, I was really anxious to get her feeding and up and over the 1500-2k gram range by fall without having to over feed her, but she wouldnt eat until about 10 days ago.

Your post should be a very good example for the people who post and say "my snake hasnt ate for 3 weeks", they should realize these snakes can go a looonngg time without eating and still be ok. Also. like you seemed to hint at in your post and I feel as well, and its that you dont really need to be concerned unless they start losing body mass. If you have a 1800 gram snake and it loses 30% body mass you have a problem, unless it laid a bunch of eggs that is. If you have a 1800 gram snake and it loses 100 grams over 10 months, I dont really worry too much

I have a het pied female who did the same thing. She just a a small rat for me last night and hasn't ate since October. Now if I can get the other one to eat.
