Bad egg question....

magicalmorphs Jun 20, 2008 12:06 AM

I lost power a few days ago from a thunder storm that rolled through Texas and my electricity was off for 12 1/2 hours. That means my incubator was off this long also. The next day one of the eggs looked like it started going bad. Today it looks even worse and the veins that I was able to see aren't present anymore and it has a spots on the egg that are starting to look wet. It is attached to 2 other eggs and I wanted to know if I should try to remove it from them since it is touching them. It's a real shame because they were the biggest most beautiful eggs I've ever seen!! They looked like dinosaur eggs they were so big!! Hopefully I wont loose anymore. Thanks
Chris

Your worry is very premature. Give it a while before you remove the "bad" eggs.
I would also invest in a backup power supply.

It is definately going bad. I have 17 eggs in there. The other eggs in the tub it's in are still plump and white and its starting to get mold on it now. They still have 31 days before they're due to hatch.

Sometimes the odd egg will croak... no big deal. The other eggs will be fine.

....Hova-Bator incubator?.......

they are too short bottomed......heat source is too close to eggs.....they dry out......do you use lids on them boxes?......would help......I don't know if they are used and taken out for pics or you don't use lids......if you do use the lids....the eggs in the back aren't in a box.....they look dry......the loose vermiculite will dry out by having loosely placed edges to the pile......

......Hova-Bator......need to have a replacement bottom put on them..taller bottom......they ship fish and meats in styrofoam boxes....find one that fits .......they all won't..they come in many sizes.......

I fill the whole bottom of the box with like 4 inches or more of vermiculite and wet it down till correct then bury eggs halfway into this.......works well if done correctly (or close to it)...

yes the green egg is being attacked by fungus on the inside....it will sweat......and stink like all ####

.the egg in front of pic has a shadow to it.....it may turn???.keep eyes on it...

..........I have a 4th incubator heating up now......and 2 females setting on eggs and 20 more to lay maybe.LOL.....3 boxes are FULL as they can be......I hope some hatch before I get too many more.......ugh.....

......good luck........

You're right that bottom egg does scare me too! It's getting a little of bad color to it and the veins aren't as well pronounced when I candle it. I hope it makes it for the term....only time will tell.

Bad eggs normally don't affect the good ones, so like Mykee said, wait a while before doing anything. I also agree with the back up power source. Had to use my generator this year for the first time, and with a loaded incubator, it is now worth every penny I paid and then some.

What part of Texas are you in? I would like to know others in my area.

magicalmorphs Jun 20, 2008 10:40 AM

I live in Kemp in the Cedar Creek Lake area. It's about 60 miles east of Dallas. You?

I know where Kemp is. I use to live in Gun Barrel City. I am now in Waco.
