Deworming Suggestions?

bgexotics Sep 01, 2003 09:31 PM

I have a pair of Red Niger Uromastyx and they need deworming. What is the best way to get the dewormer into them. I tried giving it through a syringe but it was difficult to open their mouths and I don't want to hurt them. I am using panacur paste. Will they eat it if it's mixed in their food? Also does anyone know where to find a good caresheet specifically for the Red Niger Uro's?
Thanks!

As far as a good caresheet, the only ones that I have found to be the best are the ones at Deer Fern Farms. I think that uro's in general are kept basically the same as far as diet, heating, etc. so I doubt you will find one specifically for yours.

For the worming, what worked great for me, was to first, inject the meds into a wax worm (providing yours like to eat them) then feed to the uro. You'd have to ask the vet to get the needle that fits the syringe. That's the only way I can get mine to take any meds and be assured they are getting the full dose.

I'd be afraid of putting it on food since 1...they may not eat all the food therefore not get enough, or 2..if you have multiple uros, you cant be sure who is getting what dose and possibly overdose one. (not sure if that applies to you or not)

Good luck!

Ihave two saharan/niger uros as well, they do not have a specific caresheet, just follow the same caresheet as you would for all uros. deerfernfarms.com has a great caresheet. as for deworming, get a small syringe i used a 3 cc one when my female came with a bacterial infection. Once the syringe is all set and the wormer in and all, place it in the side of their mouthsand wiggle it until they either A) open their mouths, or B) you can get their jaws open a bit. Once this happens shoot in the dewormer quickly, they dont give you too much time i found. This should work and you really won't hurt the uro, just don't jab them with the syringe or anythign too rough.
Good luck and other questions feel free.

Your pet list sounds like my house. I have ten horses (Saddlebreds and Quarter Horses), Jack Russells, 2 labs, a retriever, fish, reptiles, poultry, and miscellaneous other pets.
How funny!
