jcicchino Jun 20, 2008 07:55 AM

I have recently [1 month] aquired a pair of hatchling spilotes they eat great my question is do these snakes ever stop biting? I am a pit guy and use to getting struck at by angery snake but they dont bite ......much these little suckers bite every time you touch them, open their cage, what ever you do.do they ever calm dowm as they get older? cant see a 8ft plus snake acting the same as a hatchling, that might hurt thanks for any info Joe

Joe,
you might want to get some welder's mitts in the mean time, hahaha!

BTW, that new male melanoleucus is doing great, chugging rat pups- gluglugluglug....

This picture was taken moments before the 911 call. Since they are smart they will draw you in until you feel confident before an extremely calculated attack. I usually wrap my arms around my neck to protect the jugular vein! LOL Relax it will have a personality all its own in time. Most get to know you others??? Well? Who knows!!!!!!!!!!

I would say get used to it. The good thing is, they have small heads and teeth so they don't do much damage/cause much pain when they connect. I've also learned that they just head butt almost as much as open mouth bites.

I have found that young tiger rats also seem to be supremely confident. They don't seem to be overly flighty or defensive, but if you give them a reason to feel threatened, they will quickly tell you to back off and then calm right back down. :D I also have two large wild caught adults (8-9 feet each) that are not bitey, but are very flighty and nervous. Kind of the opposite of the three 2-year olds I raised from hatchlings. Basically, the rule I live by with my tigers is, move slowly and deliberately until they are out of their enclosures and have settle down. Doing that alone helps me avoid most toothy interactions with them.

Hey Joe, here's link to a quick video I did back in October. Notice how quickly the demon spawn female takes a whack at me and then settles right down into curious mode...unlike my amazon tree boas who are mostly just evil all the time!
