Man Accused Of Dumping Rat Bodies

POSTED: 5:29 pm EDT June 20, 2008
UPDATED: 5:32 pm EDT June 20, 2008
OCALA, Fla. -- Dozens of decomposing rat bodies found scattered near an Ocala subdivision led to the arrest of a Central Florida man.

Investigators said Christopher Stevens was taken into custody Friday after he admitted that the rats belonged to him.

Stevens said the rats were part of his reptile business that recently went out of business.

A group of construction workers picking up trash near Southwest 114th Street initially found the rat carcasses near the roadway. Some were inside laboratory boxes.

Several residents were concerned the dead animals posed a risk and complained about an unbearable smell.

Health department officials said it does not appear the rats are a health hazard.

Stevens will be charged with illegally dumping the animals.
