I have a very large pond in the back of my house and I'm deciding to either get common snappers or alligator snappers. I live in CA, any ideas, advice, etc..?

Neither (unfortunately, because they can be interesting animals).

I believe that ALL snapping turtles are illegal in Calif.

Check your laws to be sure.

Duhhh. No. They are illegal, period.

The response from "kurma" notwithstanding, the website:

states that: "California state law prohibits residents from keeping snapping turtles of any kind..."

the site:

says: "some states, like California for example, completely forbid posession of snapping turtles"

talks about: "the currently prohibited species (including snapping turtles) in California"

and, finally:

(the California law site) makes it quite clear that regular people are not going to get a permit.
A zoo might... maybe.

You'll have to find other types of turtles... or move.
