Im alittle confused about housing snakes

jbagley Jun 21, 2008 12:14 PM

Ok if your a breeder and your housing say 100 snakes for breeding plus all the snakes from the clutches,If your using a rack Do you keep your breeder snakes that you arent selling in the rack or is keeping them in a rack only a temporary cage? Because the iris cb-70 tubs that I see most breeders use are 34" 17.5" x 5.3" and don't you need a larger cage for a full grown ball python or is that ok? Thanks

I'm not a breeder, but the rack systems made for balls will work for adults their whole life. Ball pythons REALLY need very little room to live in and in some cases the smaller space means security to them.

On the other end of the spectrum though, given a larger living area does give them more room to cruise at night if they so choose.

Many people will argue that rack systems are cruel, but these people obviously know nothing about snakes.
Snakes, when not hunting, generally hide. Underground, wedged in holes in trees...where ever they feel safe.
Ball pythons spend 90% of their time in termite burrows, in chambers just big enough to turn around in.

Rack systems are great housing ALL the time. Cheap, efficient and perfectly humane.

Don't by that big rack you mentioned for your babies. Babies should be kept in shoebox sized enclosures to do well...

34 inches IS a good tank

.....I just bred and got eggs from a female ghost ball that is still in a sweater box technically.....

a Phillips ...sweater box.....

that's 11 inches x 16 inches.......

she laid 6 eggs and I don't think she turned 2 yet....

.....I needed the spiders het ghost......she was ready too.....

......(((I put her in a 34 incher to lay along with a pastel female ......thought the roaming would make her feel better for a little while...)

I know.....she and all the toehrs will get bigger boxes real soon......have to make room to move them up.......
