Nueces county splendida "hypo" looking

antelope Jun 21, 2008 07:57 PM

Here's a few pics of a w.c. from a few years ago from Nueces county, Texas, outside of the Corpus Christi city limits. I kept this male to see if I could reproduce the hypo look. Not saying he is, but there is no black on this snake, but very dark chocolate on the head fading to a milk chocolate color on the body. His belly squares are a nice even chocolaty color as well. I had a locality female to raise up for him but I found her in a gas well and she succumbed to the gases I think. I will be on the lookout for another! I really like this color phase of splendida, so different than all my others. Couple of iundoor shots against a blue wall seems to show the colors well, and I took him outside for a few natural afternoon light shots but he was digging for China and I didn't get great shots. One of my favorite splendies!

Wow Todd-that one is if anything MORE hypo-looking than my own two females, and they are from a proven recessive hypo line! You gotta breed that puppy!

I KNOW, I almost went for one of Don's animals at Daytona but wanted to try for a locality line. I may be talking to you by fall if something doesn't show up by then.

Brad is the head of the hypo actually a dark chocolate, almost black but not? That is exactly the case with my male.

Yep-both my hypos are like that!

BTW-I broke down and went to all disposable water bowls (appropriately sized deli cups in PVC rings) and am very pleased with the result-I'm sure that will have a good effect long term on the health and fecundity of my colony. And it certainly is a time and labor saver! Thanks for the recommendation.

The PERFECT splendida, the one Todd L. and I are always raving about. Maybe a Don Shores?

Oh yeah, this one!!
She is the spitting image of her dad, seen on Shores's site.

She would actually not be ready for breeding for at least a few more years, as she was not only a very small second clutch baby, but a picky eating second clutch baby at that, who didn't want to eat pinks at first.

Overall though, I probably won't breed her as I got out of breeding back in the nineties and now just collect quality specimens.

>> "I got out of breeding back in the nineties and now just collect quality specimens."

* Billy!,.....that animal is totally inferior, and FAR from being quality,......so may I suggest that you give the poor animal away to a good home?,..................Like MINE perhaps!..hahahha!

Dude!,...that thing is really outstanding, man!,...from the bold "sock-head" hood, to that vivid lemon yellow coloration. And the friggin gloss-black is second to none!

Oh,...I guess my second part there means it's nice!..

later, man! ~Doug

Thank you Doug!
Yeah, she is a looker, and I am blessed to have her. I had always wanted a splendy that had her looks, and when my friend Shores had let me know that she was available, I was more than happy to oblige.
She is the complete image of her dad, and I had seen him and almost had grabbed him up at the ETHS show years back. He was for sale for like $75, being a full adult and looking like he does. I about bought him but then decided to wait.
For days and days, I kept thinking about him and kicking myself for not buying him.
I found out later that Shores had picked him up from the seller at the show a few hours later at the show, so he then bred him the next year, and BAM! She was born!
The day I got her home, I had not been that excited about a snake purchase in a long time. I had the shakes, etc.. I couldn't stop staring!!!
Thanks for the compliments!!!

* LOL!,...Yes, when you "swoon" over a hatchling like a teanager about to loose his viginity to a royal "hottie",......you know you're severely addicted to snakes,...............ME TOO!!!!!

It would be a shame to let the perfect splendida not pass on her genes, I hope someday you rethink your position because she is textbook perfect, IMHO!

I agree Todd!,........that is the perfect "POSTER BOY" representative for splendida!, but fortunately, there are some other outstanding examples out there from Don's line(s).
