Bay Area snake folks?

phchristy Jun 22, 2008 12:03 PM

I'm writing an article about keeping snakes (not breeding or selling, just keeping) for the SF Chronicle/SFGate.com. I would like to interview people in the Bay Area if possible but anywhere is fine, about what drew them to keeping snakes, why they enjoy them, what it's like to keep them, etc.

I'd particularly like to speak with any teachers who have shared their love of snakes with their students, or anyone who works with sharing the hobby with young people through an organization, herp society, zoo program, etc.

The article will be aimed at showing the human side of the hobby for those who might feel that people who keep snakes are not someone with whom they can identify, and whose right to keep snakes, including large snakes and snakes with a "bad reputation," might be in question at some point. It will be a human interest piece, not an "expert" piece for an audience that's already familiar with the hobby, this site, etc.

If you would be willing to be interviewed by me either by phone or via email, please post here or email me at this link. And please feel free to share this request with anyone you think might be a good person for me to talk to.

Thank you very much!

I lived in the north bay (Santa Rosa/Rohnert Park) for a few years, although I now live in Vegas. I could answer some questions if you'd like. You can email me at christopher_weiss@hotmail.com. If you want to call, then email me and I'll give you my number.

I'm 20 and have only been keeping snakes for about four years, but I've built up quite a collection already. I used to bring some of them to my high school zoology/biology classes (before and after my graduation) to educate the other students about snakes' behavior and physiology. When I first started doing it I couldn't believe that in most classes the majority of students thought snakes were completely blind!
