OT Lucy triple clutches ...

FRoberts Jun 22, 2008 02:14 PM

I only tried breeding her twice and she has decided to drop a third with no re breeding from any males.

First was lucy to lucy 9 out of 9 hatched out already.

Second is still incubating and has like 3 weeks to go still.

Second she was bred to that orange rat snake (but maybe he sired third and second is a lucy clutch)

Third was laid 6 days after she shed like other two clutches this year. She laid in between the 21st and 22nd at night. I had put in an egg box cause she looked to be gravid to me. I had not re bred her again but she had that distinct OVAL look to her that made me think she was going to drop some eggs.

12 eggs.

9 appear to be fertile but I am incubating them all to be sure.

Interestingly I will have to wait to see who sired the clutches. If it's not a lucy then it's the orange snake. It is possible both could be sires. She looks no worse for the wear though.

Egg Box...

Removed to incubation box (vermiculite)...

(3 towards back look to be infertile but one has good area and is attached to that other egg)

finished incubation box...without lid of course...

pic's of mom from today after cleaning her and enclosure and removing eggs etc...

Wow! She is quite the trooper! I can't imagine having three sets of kids in such rapid succession. It will be interesting to see what you get from the second and third clutches.

Frank,
...Are triple clutches very common in Texas Rats? I had double clutches a couple times from Cornsnakes. The last time I bred any of the big ratsnakes was Yellow ones over 40 years ago and multiple clutching was unknown at that time.

Jeff,

I have never even double clutched a snake before. I have heard of triple clutches in colubrids but you do not see them too often as far as I know.

I personally know a few people that double clutched corn snakes and other rat snakes as well.

Amazing she had them all in a short period of time as well.

She...

Shed, bred, shed, then laid.

(only waited one day after first lay)

Bred, shed, then laid.

shed laid.

She fed through all gestation periods till the last two weeks before dropping.

Holy cow, that's EGGxtremely awesome. Good luck
with all the eggs, and give Mom an extra tasty treat
as a reward.

Thanks,
Ed
