Rocket's latest shots

wftright Jun 22, 2008 05:15 PM

I decided to check on Rocket because I haven't seen him in a few days. He's doing well, and I took some pictures. He's up to 55.8 grams almost a year exactly since he arrived. I haven't fed him aggressively, so the slower growth should be no surprise. Even with less than ambitious feeding, he sometimes refuses a meal. Over the past month, he's been eating very well, so he may have hit a growth spurt. He's not as bright as he was when he was younger, but I really like the mature color that he's developing.

Actually, vichris named him Rocket as a hatchling because of the head pattern, but I thought that the name was so good that I kept calling him Rocket. Naming them is always hard for me, so I have to give credit where credit is due for those who've helped.

naming is always hard for me too... so when i'm just laying around or something and i think of a name i have to write it down or else i'll forget it. So i have a list of names in my "snake filing cabinet" so i can just pick 1 out of the bunch. My new guy is gonna be hard b/c as you can see in the post below (the one saying i'm Giddy)... he has a Y on his head. and Y would be STUPID... i'll have to find another name for him.... I dunno the background on him.... but the petstore said the guy who traded him in was interested in Milks and was friends with Tony D. which could be almost anyone!!! heheheh.... but rocket is a cute name as long as it doesnt shoot out of your hand like a rocket.... i have a corn fresh out of the egg like that... i should name it black rocket(since its an anery) but then i'll feel bad when its time to sell it... b/c once you name something its harder to get rid of it.....

A file of possible names is a good idea, but I tend to name them on the spur of the moment. My first ball python was purchased a month or so after the big hurricanes in 2005. Maybe the stress of the hurricanes made me finally decide that I needed a friend in the house, so that first girl became Katrina. I bought another one right around Easter of 2006. A friend's mom suggested Ester as a short for Easter. On the day that I brought her home, my first day lily of the year bloomed. She became Ester Lily. The ball python that I bought last spring became Duncan because I originally supported Duncan Hunter in the presidential race. I guess if things had been different, I might have ended up calling one of them Mitt someday.

A friend of mine adopted a cat that she named Rico because she's a Steven Tyler fan and his real name is Rico-something or other.

If I were you, I'd think of anything significant that happened around this time. Did you bring this guy home on the summer solstice? If so, he could be Sol. LOL I don't know.

Bill,

Very nice specimen man...I like that trifoliate "Y" head pattern. Does his name reflect his ability to "bolt" our of his enclosure when it's opened? Just wondering where "Rocket" came from...

Jim.

Jim,

Thanks for the comments. The "Rocket" moniker came from vichris who prodcued this guy in 2006. The head pattern resembles a rocket, so Chris named him "Rocket." Finding good names is always tough, so I just continued to call him Rocket. He doesn't try to get out of the cage much at all. Every so often, I'll find him climbing his thermostat cord or climbing a cage accessory. When I open the cage, he just waits under his hide to be caught or fed. He recently took his largest prey yet, a 7.4 gram fuzzy.

Thanks man...It was easy to "see" where Sharktooth came from...I have to admit, virtually all of my animals (alterna and thayeri) are quite docile. They've learned what's on the end of the tongs and everybody usually comes out of hiding when their human keeper starts mucking around with their enclosures

Unlike my Brooksi that if you're "scented" and they're hungry...Well, in their mind you're food and you would fit well in their digestive system...No matter how BIG you really are...That "attitude" makes them special as well...For that matter, they strike at the ceiling fan when their enclosures are opened and they're hungry! Man, I'm glad these buggers don't grow to 30 feet! Disappearing in the king snake death coil spin would not be the way to go...

Later,
Jim.

He's really looking good Bill. I like that peachy background color also. He was a tough one to let go. Probably one of the coolest head patterns too. It was tough to beat Sharktooths head pattern though.

I had forgotten about Sharktooth. He was Rocket's sire wasn't he? In any case, Rocket's eating more aggressively now. I can leave a mouse in the cage, and he'll seek and eat fairly quickly. He took a 7.4 gram fuzzy on Sunday.

Bill,

I like how his saddle erasures are becoming more pronounced. His colors are also becoming more complex. Very nice.
