jani egg hatching temps

robw3 Jun 22, 2008 10:02 PM

Anyone out here familiar with the temp. range for jani eggs? This is my first venture into breeding Pits and i'm wondering what (temp., humidity, medium), if anything, should be done differently than other colubrids (corns, kings, etc.). Also this was an accidental breeding (the female is an '06) and all literature i've found indicates that they shouldn't breed until their 3rd or 4th year. She is ~50-55 inches. Niether the male(an '05) nor the female were brumated. She was housed with the male for about an hour during a cage cleaning earlier in the spring and sure enough she popped out 6 huge eggs today (Wow, these things are huge compared to corn eggs). The female is from Randy Whittington who I believe i've seen post on this forum a couple of times. Randy, and everyone else, any and all info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, rob377

I'm glad she laid a healthy clutch with no problems Rob. I use a 50/50 mix of slightly moist but not wet vermiculite and pearlite. I incubate at 80 degrees, give or take a degree with fairly high humidity. Good luck.

Appreciate the info Randy, can't thank you enough. This was quite a surprise for her being this young, although she is larger than the three year old male. Have you ever encountered any problems with the females breeding this young?

I've never bred any jani that young. I usually breed them their 3rd or 4th year for the first time.
Todd she is het for watch your extremities if there is a rat in the vacinity. Truthfully the mother of the female that Rob has is the most psychotic feeder of any snake I have in my collection including all species. She actually charges the front of the cage frequently even when their isn't the scent of rodents in the air. She will slam into the front of her cage so loudly when I walk by sometimes it scares the crap out of me. Of course I always laugh after I clean my shorts and collect myself.

Ya Randy my girl is a pig also, never refused a meal, never regurged and even eats in the blue. Guess that's why she put on so much growth and bred at less than two years old. Versus the male (from another breeder) who refuses about 30% of the time and has the occasional regurge. Don't think she has quite the temperment of her mom, although she is a lot meaner than her mate and puts on a nice show if you open up her hide box. Here's a pic of the new mommy if i figure out how to post photos on here correctly.
