battery powered heat tape.

for a project in my package design class I'm redesigning boxes/packages for petco. I thought it would be kind of cool to design a heated box to take reptiles home in. I know absolutely nothing about heat tape but I figured it would be the best canadate for something like this. So can I just hook the wires up to a 9v battery or something and it will work? if not, any suggestions?

I don't care if it heats up to 130 degrees or just a little bit. just as long as the teacher feels some warmth and says ooh thats impressive. I'm not actually going to put a reptile in the thing. Now that I think about it. It would probably be better not to use this product so the reptile inside doesn't get all amped up and bump his head on the sides of the box... but that will be our little secret.

Getting heat out of very low voltage (like 3V) takes lots of current, meaning a large battery pack would be necessary. For that reason, the portable, temporary heat packs are the best approach. They are inexpensive and effectives and fit nicely in a pocket on the side of a shipping box.

With battery power, imagine shipping a 300 gram snake with 1 pound of battery.. not great for shipping rates.

Couldn’t you just mount a light bulb inside a small project box and let it heat up? Even a small filament light bulb will heat exactly it’s watts worth. Any heat will radiate upward, enough to register a difference with a cheap temp gun.
