Is It Necessary to Feed Pinkies?

Paradon Jun 23, 2008 09:10 AM

I know my leo will eat a pinkie if I get a live one and wiggle it infront of it when it is hungry. I find they will except the live one much easier than the frozen one. I've only fed one pinkie to my other two leos, but other than that, they grew up exclusively on crickets and giant mealworms. I have two for 2 years now and the other for a little over a year and they are doing great without the pinkies.

No it is not necessary to feed pinkies. Some people feed them pinkies during breeding season. I have been breeding mine for 2 years and they have never had them. I did try once but they wouldn't eat them. Mine are very healthy and have nice large tails.

even when i try to put a pinky in my girls mouths they spit it out across the room. I swear... it must be a pinky thing, but my leos will not take them worth anything!!! so i gave up.... now when i'm feeding the snakes and i happen to have an extra pinky it goes to the snapping turtle.... she'll eat anything!!!

I agree with everyone, It is not necessary, I normally do during breeding season and also just for the heck of it some times. Call me demented but I thinks its cool to see a lizard eat a mouse. So far Patches "my new gecko" has been in my posesion for about a year and no pinkies for her thus far, just meal worms.

Just my personal opinion that pinky mice are unbalanced enough of a diet that it does more harm than good. I've fed them in the past and it isnt by any means dangerous in moderation but i think an appetites worth of crickets goes further than mice
