Reptile Education Invasion!!!!

Brandon Osborne Jun 23, 2008 12:12 PM

Hello All! Last weekend was Reptile Invasion at Wessleman Woods in Evansville, Indiana. This event lets kids learn about different reptiles, amphibians and crocodiles. It is also a crash course in snake education for the public. Here are some the pics from the Invasion! Hope you enjoy!

The 3x6 banner we had made.

The set up 8 chondros, and then small displays of ball pythons, kingsnakes and milksnakes.....I know, they're not kingsnakes.

Big Daddy's says, "Hello!"

Our niece and nephew checking out Dora.

Brandon gets a Dora Tail!

Dora was a huge hit with the kids!

Brandon made t-shirts and I made snake purses!

Thanks for looking!

Great stuff you two!,....I always LOVE to see young kids holding snakes,.....Those kids are the ones that will grow up to enjoy and respect snakes and many other animals later in life, and won't be the typical types that loath, and condone killing everyone they see.

I have always said,....."snake hating is a thing that is taught and learned".

BTW,...nice animals too!

best regards, ~Doug

Pre-children, Windy and I did a lot of educational displays at various local events. I found the best setup was simple ten gallon tanks with local animals. We didn't lable anything! Instead when asked what kind of animal was in the tank we'd bring out one of many field guides we brought and ask people to identify them using the book.

Really miss doing that. It was a lot of fun and the origin of one of my favorite kid stories. I once had this little girl come up with her brother. The boy asked what kind of turtle I had in the tank, which for reference was a nice spotted turtle. I started to break out the field guide when the girl jumped in and said she knew what kind of turtle it was. When I asked, she confidently informed me that it was a "lady bug turtle"!! To this day, I think of that and smile every time I see a spotted.

That banner is enough to make people rethink any misconceptions right off the bat. Gorgeous display, looks very clean and the pythons are something a lot of people have never even seen in “real life” before. I bet some people came away with a new attitude, which makes you guys real winners. And I see why that ring finger is the banded variety! Way to go Brandon!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Even though my wife is not into snakes like I am, she does enjoy hatching season and even raised up my last group of baby chondros......fed them and cleaned them for nearly 2 years.

We try to make our displays as pleasing and inviting to the non-snake lover as we can. Lots of color tends to draw people in and when they're seeing the animals' true colors in person it gets them thinking. Once they start thinking about why the snakes look a certain way, they start to ask more and more questions until sometimes, and only sometimes, they work up the courage to finally hold or touch one.

I even have my grandma who is 82 years old watching out for snakes for me. She had one in her garage a couple of weeks ago, so I left her a hook so she could put it in a garbage can for me. As long as I relocate them, she won't kill them. To me that's a great turn around. Most older people hate snakes. Heck, most people in general hate snakes.

Thanks again for the great comments. It mean a lot.

Kudos to you all. While you may not have sold a single animal, you did line up future reptile keepers. Public education is such a big part of all we herpers need to do to let the public know we are not mental cases. I do more of these than I can count each year and they are always fun. They also offer some of the funniest stories known to man.
