Moving advice...

aanata1 Jun 23, 2008 09:40 PM

I am moving this week... yuck! And I have no choice but to move 3 gals that may be gravid. I have left them for as long as possible, so that if they do drop their litters, the babies will have the best chance possible. I am only moving down the road, but if anyone has any words of advice on the subject... things I haven't thought of, etc... they would be greatly appreciated!

Before you go to move them make sure one room/enclosure in the new place at the correct temperature for the females as well as getting 3 extra of whatever container you use for your moss hides. This way you canencourage your females into the moss hide and then stack it inside the new(uncut/modified) containers effectively blocking them into the hide. This way they have a familiar fairly comfortable environment to be in for the trip. When you get to the new place put the hides, still locked up, into the room/enclosure that is at correct temps for them to relax at while you bring the enclosures over.

Also for the trip I would keep the traveling containers/hides covered with blackets to keep them dark. This normally does wonders for reptile or avian specimens when in a stressfull environment/situation.

Another thing, no brainer but still, is to make sure they are shock cussioned for the trip. So in most cars this would beback seat not in contact with the doors and in the front passenger seat not in contact with the doors. Also make sure to wedge the containers so a sudden stop does not send pregnant snakes all over the place.

Good luck with the move.

Sean.

If not already, use a moss hide with the holes cut in the lid. That way you can just replace the lid with a whole one when the actual move time comes. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, just try to make it gentle on them and I'd even make a special trip/load just for them!!!!

We have a moving truck that will have their cages, and I'll be following in a car with them in it, so hopefully I'll be able to take them out of the cage, and move them and the cages at the same time. Just might take some time with 33 snakes and cages, but I'll make as many trips as needed, so they all have a smooth ride! Thanks!

Just try and plan the move so the gravid ones are the last ones out and the first ones back in. with as little cage down time in the middle as you can get away with. And don't tie the snake move with the other stuff. Unless you wait untill last to disconnect/load the snakes/cages and make them a priority to get set back up at the other end. My last move (many years ago) I made two seperate moves, first I moved the animals, then I moved us. (was also to keep any rodent smell away from our household stuff)

The big things are to not expose them to too much turmoil and to avoid temperature extremes. Insulated shipping boxes work great when I take snakes to shows. If you have a tropical fish store nearby they probably get their shipments in the industry standard 17 inch boxes which are great for one or two big adults per box. Put them stright into the box or to make handling easier and more secure tie them inside pillow cases and place them in the boxes in the pillow cases.

The ambient temp here is 75 tonight, and I'm going to move them in a couple of hours, so hopefully that's not too cool. They do have sweater boxes for their humid hides, 2 out of the 3 are in them, so that shouldn't be a shock. I didn't think to throw a blanket over their boxes, but that is a great idea... will do! Thanks for the replies *fingers crossed* that this will go smoothly!
