I need some good herping spots as close to lillington as possible for finding timber or canebrakes.
Harnett County has records of C. horridus, as well as S. miliarius, A. piscivorus, A. contortrix, and even historic records of M. fulvius.
Keep in mind that C. horridus, as well as all of the other rattlesnakes (and the coral snake) are protected in NC. Big trouble if you collect one.
Why are you looking for timbers/canebrakes?
Michael
I've got plenty of snakes I'm not interested in collecting. I can't even imagine what my girlfriend would do to me if I did collect ar rattle snake lol. I just want to photograph them I've seen plenty of cottonmouths and I moved them but no rattlers.
Timbers don't adapt well to development. Look for larger tracts of land with undisturbed habitat. You'll have to move away from Lillington and go SE or SW. Get a NC Atlas to start. Even in the right habitat, finding them is hit or miss in my experience. I don't think they move as much as other species, and therefore don't turn up on roads or under cover as often.
Are you finding your Cottons in Harnett Co? Do they come up the Cape Fear as far as Raven Rock SP?
Thanks,
Michael
no they are not in raven rock but there are plenty in the upper little river. ill post a pic.
how do I resize pictures?
I use Microsoft Picture Manager and go to the tab "Pictures" and select "Compress Pictures". From there, select the option for web pages. Should do the trick.
I look forward to seeing cottons from that area. Also, post pics of mole kings and corns you've found from the area if you don't mind.
Thanks,
Michael
still having trouble but will post as soon as possible. I have not found mole kings or corn but have seen d o r mud snake I wish I could have seen it alive. I see plenty of hognose, rats, cottonmouths, northern and red bellied water snakes, brown snakes, worm snakes, and of course racers and occasionally eastern kingsnakes. If u get on the enrich the experience on the raven rock u can see pics of ones seen there.
