safo Sep 02, 2003 02:22 AM

Well i found out this weekend that my "male" tamatave panther is a FEMALE, and i was wondering what locales could i breed here with?, i am think of possibly getting another tamatave, but could get a sambava male if the price is right, just wondering if their would be a problem crossbreeding locales?, also she hasn't shed in about 2 months, is this normal?

crossbreeding locales is possible, and many people have been successful doing it. a lot of people however noticed that a lot of the eggs seem to die right before haching and that the babies sometimes, but rarely, have health problems that the breeder relates back to cross lacale breeding .. hope this helps!

In addition to whatever problems you may encounter (I have heard conflicting stories about whether or not there is a high mortality rate with the eggs, etc.) There is another consideration. Usually, pure locales sell for more than crosses, even though you can get some stunning colors with crosses. Unless you plan on selling to pet stores who don't give a rat's hoot about locale, I would recommend sticking with a pure locale. Some people have very strong opinions against crossing locales, and while I'm not one of them, I still think that breeding for pure locales makes more sense, fiscally.
