why do they call garters small???

justin_harris Jun 24, 2008 12:30 PM

hi, im new to the forum and was wandering why the common description of eastern garters is 18-24 inches, i kept the entire clutch of easterns i bred in 06[28 of them], and all are well over 24 inches

this one is around 36 inches, so why does it say that? just curious

Judging by the picture, I'd have to say that you have there a Radix. (plains garter)

From what I have seen Radix get rather large compared to say an Eastern.

Garters are called small, compared to many other Colubrids, like say Milks or rat snakes. and definitely small compared to boids.

i get that alot on my eastern garters, theyre a henry county local, theyre from virginia. the one in the pic is a eastern male that was born from two easterns i caught in my back yard in 05, it was born in 06. all easterns in my area have no blue or green like most, just black. even the stripeless ones, they just have black backs and no yellow[somtimes blue or red] stripes.

thats whats strange, the entire clutch is that big. someone else suggested over feeding, but theyre fed once a week, and now there on 2 four inch creek chubs a feeding, dout thats to much. my 07 wandering garter is already 18 inches long, and hes never been fed anything larger than a small minnow. hes on 1 inch long dace or chub once a week. maybe its something to do with the atmosphere or somthing, i dont really know...
